San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie’s police entourage was attacked Thursday evening on the outskirts of the Tenderloin – leaving the officer bleeding from the back of his head after a street brawl.

The mayor was not injured in the incident, which happened before 6:00 p.m. near Cedar Street, according to Mission Local.

One San Francisco Police Department officer assigned to Lurie’s security detail was left gasping for breath and bleeding after hitting his head during a struggle with the suspect.

The mayor was riding in a black SUV with a policeman and the driver – who is also a policeman – when three people allegedly blocked the car on the road.

Lurie jumped into the SUV and asked the group to leave, the injured officer told police.

At first, the three seem to agree. But things took a turn for the worse when the other man started “talking profanity,” the officer said.

When the policeman came in and told him to leave, the suspect first backed away – then lunged at him.

The policeman grabbed the man’s body, but the two fell to the ground during the fight. The officer fell backwards and hit his head on the road, leaving him bleeding.

Meanwhile, Lurie’s driver – also a police officer – was dealing with another man at the scene. That officer did not appear to be injured. It is not clear whether the second man hit anyone, and the role of the third person mentioned by the police is also not clear.

The suspected attacker was handcuffed at the scene and repeatedly shouted, “F–k you!” as the police arrested him. The second suspect tried to run away but was caught by the police at a distance.

More than ten police officers crowded the area surrounding the two suspects lying in handcuffs.

Lurie watched what happened next – and was visibly shaken by grief.

The mayor told Mission Local that the men tried to fight the policeman but refused to elaborate.

In a statement, the San Francisco Police Department said officers responded to the area of Cedar and Polk Street around 5:38 p.m. and arrested two men. Two police officers who were working in the security of the mayor received injuries that were not considered to be life-threatening.

Louis Wong, president of the San Francisco Police Officers Association, praised the police response.

“We are grateful that the police officers assigned to the mayor’s security detail acted quickly and bravely to protect him from a dangerous and unexpected situation,” said Wong.

“We wish our injured officer a full and speedy recovery and commend all involved for their bravery and decisive actions.”
