Former Obama White House adviser Valerie Jarrett said on Saturday that President Trump was not invited to participate in the opening ceremony of the Obama Presidential Center.

According to a press release, the grand opening celebrations for the Obama Presidential Center will begin on June 18 and run through June 21, including “a series of events that bring together changemakers, community members, volunteers, and supporters who made Obama’s presidency a reality and welcome visitors to celebrate the power of hope and change.”

Jarrett talked about the upcoming inauguration of the center on MS Now’s “The Weekend” with Jonathan Capehart, who asked, “So if things like these presidential centers or presidential libraries – I was there when the Clinton presidential library opened – there are all kinds of dignitaries there that are invited. So I’m just wondering, Trump Valerie, is President Trump Valerie?”

He gave an answer clarifying that only those who participated in the political journey of former President Barack Obama will be part of the opening ceremony.

“Like I said, this is really our opportunity to celebrate with the people who joined President Obama on this trip, ordinary people who have done amazing things. So, no, but I will say, I hasten to add, that after it opens to the public, if President Trump wants to come and visit the facility, President Obama would be happy to do that.”

“That was a very hard ‘No,’ Valerie,” host Eugene Daniels chuckled.

“And I want to know what you think about a country that feels depressed, President Obama being a person who represents hope. What does it mean that this center will be opened under everything that is happening in this country right now?” Daniels asked.

Jarrett replied that in times like these, people need to remind themselves of the importance of hope in difficult situations.

“That’s why it’s more important than ever to have a center like this where people will be able to meet, not everyone will agree,” he said. “In fact, we welcome people with different opinions. We welcome people who did not vote for President Obama to see that we can find common ground, even in these difficult times.”

Daniels went on to ask if former President George W. Bush would be invited.

“Sure,” Jarrett said. “You know, we work very closely with President Bush. And I often say that during the transition, and I was one of the planners of President Obama’s transition, President Bush and his team could not have supported us more when we had weeks when the country or the world was experiencing the earthquake in Haiti, President Bush and President Clinton worked together on the relief fund in Haiti.
