The Iranian regime attacks students protesting in the streets of Tehran

Iranian state thugs clashed with student protesters in the streets of Tehran on Saturday, leaving some injured, as the Islamic Republic denied claims they had killed more than 30,000 of its own people.

Students from Sharif University of Technology, Amirkabit University of Technology and Besheti University of Tehran, took to the streets chanting slogans such as “Death to Khamenei,” according to Iran International.

Some students who were protesting at Sharif University were attacked by the Basij soldiers – a group of the Iranian government, the Times of Israel reported.

Those arguments ended up injuring some students and a large crowd sang “shamelessly” at Basij meat, according to the report.

The extent of the injuries is unclear.

Student protests also erupted in the eastern city of Mashad, where protesters from Mashad University of Medical Sciences gathered and chanted “freedom,” according to a video obtained by Iran International.

Widespread unrest began to subside in late December as protesters took to the streets across Iran to protest economic stagnation – protests that have sparked calls for regime change.

President Trump said that the brutal regime was responsible for killing about 32,000 Iranians during the protests, Al Jazeera reported.

But the Islamic Republic pushed back on Trump’s estimate, with Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi saying on Saturday that only 3,117 Iranians had been killed – and their deaths came at the instigation of the US, calling the dead “victims of the latest terrorist campaign.”

“If anyone disputes the accuracy of our data, please share any evidence,” Araghchi wrote X hours after Trump’s comments.

Human Rights activists based at the UN in Iran have documented that more than 7,000 people have been killed during the protests and are investigating 12,000 additional cases, according to Al Jazeera.

The major discrepancy in the death toll comes as tensions in the region escalate.

Trump has warned Tehran that he has 10 days to strike a deal on increasing nuclear weapons and weapons production even if the US and Israel plan to launch airstrikes.

Meanwhile, the US continues to build up its military presence in the region in preparation for a possible conflict. The USS Gerald R. Ford entered the Mediterranean Sea on Friday morning.

The USS Abraham Lincoln and several other ships including a large “armada” are stationed across from Iran in the Arabian Sea.
