The shocking circumstances surrounding the alleged kidnapping of Savannah Guthrie’s mother from her million-dollar rural Arizona home may suggest more than one perpetrator was involved in the crime, according to a former NYPD negotiator.
Wallace Zeins told CNN late Tuesday that a ransom note purporting to belong to Nancy Guthrie, 84, demanding a large payment in cryptocurrency, may provide clues related to the identity of the kidnap suspects.
Desperate Arizona police are appealing for the alleged kidnapper, but Zeins believes there may not be a single bad actor to blame.
“I believe it’s more than one person. He’s 150 pounds, 5’5, wakes up in the middle of the night, not in the best of health – he can’t walk or run, so I would think there’s more than one person involved in this particular crime,” Zeins said before analyzing the alleged ransom note.
“What does that tell you, it tells you that some kind of group knows what Bitcoin is about, and social media, and they know the system.”
The ransom note allegedly included information about the crime scene that was left at Nancy’s home, according to TMZ.
It is not known if the ransom note was handwritten. If it had been written down, it would have had to pass forensic testing, according to Zeins.
“If it was on a computer, that helps and because the FBI is very good at what they do when it comes to electronic surveillance and electronic devices of that nature, they will be able to further that investigation,” he said.
Nancy, who requires critical medication every 24 hours, was reported missing Sunday and Pima County police fear she has been abducted.
Investigators have not found any evidence to suggest that his disappearance was intentional.
“Currently, there is no reliable information to show that this was a targeted incident,” the agency told KSAZ.
The police have confirmed that the reports of the ransom are being intensively investigated and have been forwarded to detectives.
“Anything that comes in, goes directly to our detectives who work with the FBI,” the force said.
President Trump vowed to provide federal assistance in an effort to help solve the case, and promised to call “Today” star Savannah.
In the letter, which was first posted on TMZ, the alleged kidnappers demanded millions of dollars in Bitcoin.
It also means that something bad will happen if the payment is not made.
Meanwhile, bloodstains were found outside Nancy’s home in Catalina Hills and part of the Ring doorbell camera was missing.
FBI agents visited the home of Savannah’s sister, Annie, on Tuesday. Annie was the last person to see Nancy before the matriarch disappeared. The two had dinner together and Nancy returned home around 9:30pm on Saturday.
Nancy is said to have disappeared from her family at noon on Sunday after she did not attend the service.
When police searched his home, they found his Apple Watch and a police source said his pacemaker stopped synchronizing with the device around 2 a.m. Sunday.
