Texas Tech booster Cody Campbell, who sits as the school’s board chairman, had a conversation on social media with Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark about the Red Raiders’ possible Friday night football game during the upcoming season.
It may seem like a small fight over the game schedule, but Campbell, who has become one of the most prominent promoters in college sports, posted on X that the game between Texas Tech and Houston should remain as scheduled on Saturday, September 19.
Why? Campbell argued that “Friday Night Lights” in Texas is “sacred” in high school football.

“Friday night lights are sacred to the Great State of Texas! It makes no sense that the @Big12Conference and @FOXSports would even consider scheduling @TexasTechFB and @UHCougarFB on Friday night (October 18th)!! I know @brettyormark isn’t a native Texan, but we’ve known him for a long time!” Campbell posted, though it should read September – not October 18th.
Yormark was asked about Campbell’s tweet, telling the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal on Wednesday, “Cody Campbell is not running the Big 12.”

Yormark added that the league’s board and athletic directors have approved that 12 games a year can be played on Saturdays to increase Big 12 viewership. As a result, the Texas Tech game was expected to be one of them because of their standing in college football.
“Friday Night Football Big 12 games outperformed the Conference average by 64% in 2025,” added Yormark. “All our schools are treated equally during the TV schedule and this show fits our schedule. I am grateful that our TV partners have given us these opportunities.”
Campbell continued to push back against Yormark, however, sending out another tweet Thursday that added another hot topic to Red Raiders football — their now-banned tortilla celebration.
The Big 12 has banned a tortilla-throwing celebration at Jones AT&T Stadium, threatening to fine the university if fans continue to do so.

“Obviously Brett didn’t get the memo: IT’S ALL RUNNING ABOUT LUBBOCK!!,” Campbell tweeted, referencing the famous speech head coach Joey McGuire, who was caught saying in the locker room after the 2022 win over Texas. “Maybe we should bring back the tortillas??”
Campbell spoke to ESPN about Yormark, where he continued to abuse her.
“As a commissioner, he must remember that he works for the presidents, the presidents work for the boards,” Campbell told the media. “He is not a dictator in the conference. That is not his role. It is his duty to represent his members in all cases.”
Campbell told the Avalanche-Journal that he felt it was too late to change Texas Tech’s game against Houston, adding that it wouldn’t be good for the team given that their previous game is a trip to Oregon State on Sept. 12.

Campbell has never shied away from speaking his mind on college sports, especially when it comes to media rights. He has advocated for the conferences to consolidate their franchises into a single organization like a professional sports league, although he has seen significant pushback on that. He was also part of President Donald Trump’s “Saving College Sports” panel, which took place at the White House on March 6.
Campbell was a former Texas Tech offensive lineman and was responsible for founding the Matador Club, an NIL group that led the renaissance of Texas Tech athletics in hopes of making itself a powerhouse in all sports.
