Jahi Tucker Pulls Out of Yoenli Hernandez Talks

Jahi Tucker has pulled out of talks to face WBA No. 1 middleweight Yoenli Hernandez, came away from what would have been the toughest test of his young career and overhauled the fast moving middleweight.

According to boxer Carlos Linares, undefeated Cuban Hernandez is in talks to face veteran Terrell Gausha instead. That fight is discussed on the undercard of Sebastian Fundora’s title defense against Keith Thurman. Tucker, meanwhile, is eyeing a 10-round fight with Sona Akale on February 28 at the Paramount Theater in Huntington, New York.

The Hernandez Fight Would Have Marked Tucker’s Sharpest Move

For Tucker, Hernandez’s match represents a big step. Hernandez stopped eight of his nine opponents and built a reputation for relentless pressure and hard hitting. He forces opponents to take turns and keep them there, making it difficult to work from afar.

Kyrone Davis went the full 10 rounds with Hernandez earlier this year, but the fight was decided early. Hernandez dropped Davis in the second round and showed he can hold that level, winning every round on all three cards. Davis stayed on his feet, but he was reacting rather than speeding.

That result stood out because Davis had previously given David Benavidez tough rounds in their 2021 fight and showed he can run at that level. Hernandez controlled the fight early and never gave Davis a chance to change it.

For Tucker, whose power comes from time, Hernandez presented a difficult stylistic problem. Fighters applying strong pressure clear space and force exchanges. Those situations often quickly reveal where a fighter stands.

Opponent’s Position Holds

Instead, Tucker’s path now goes through Akale. He is facing a veteran competitor who brings experience without the same results. The fight keeps Tucker active while delaying a direct test against one of the most physically demanding competitors.

Hernandez remains near the top of the WBA’s rankings and now appears to be heading to the veteran Gausha’s checkpoint. Tucker’s fight is no longer played, but his position in the division remains.

Hernandez’s bout is off the table right now, but the division continues to move. At average weight, inactivity costs the base. Top ranked competitors rarely wait long to fight.
