Standing with Israel: Why the US-Israel alliance is vital to national security

The dramatic and alarming rise of anti-Semitism in the United States cannot be denied, but it can be argued. It is especially the responsibility of true Christians to participate in oppression by teaching ancient evil. It is the special responsibility of Christian institutions – churches, colleges, publishers and so on – to do their part in making this sin once again an obvious source of shame and to help heal those who suffer from it and, where it cannot be healed, to force us to return in shame and avoid its deep shadow.
Christianity did not establish Judaism. It existed before Christ and the kingdoms of the ancient world would attack the Jews for many reasons. But, when Christianity came to dominate Europe, anti-Semitism spread beyond and within much of the Church.
Some, but not enough, of the Church have always spoken out against anti-Semitism and its precious modern version – anti-Zionism – and continue to do so. Saint John Paul the Great and Pope Benedict were the most visible and outspoken opponents of anti-Semitism in the Catholic Church during my lifetime, but many others have noted the obvious and irrepressible hostility of true Christianity to the sin of hatred rooted in hatred of Jews or their country.
THE SAFETY OF THE JEWS IN NEW YORK DEPENDS ON DESTROYED MEN AND MORAL COURAGE FROM THE MADANS
When Colorado Christian University – founded in 1914 as Denver Bible College, but now a thriving university in Lakewood, Colorado – invited me to a day of teaching, banquet and lectures, I chose as my topic the reasons why Americans of all religions, or none at all, should support Israel. I included in those words the obvious: It is a sin for Christians to hate Jews or Israelis.
That’s hardly lightning even for the “slight twisters.” But. I especially wanted to emphasize that America is an ally of Israel for non-religious reasons – reasons Christians should be aware of. It is wrong to write to reproduce the expressions and mark them with columns, but here in a summarized form the argument I made.
First, in a dangerous world, even a superpower – the United States – needs friends, especially since the People’s Republic of China is trying to be a peer in military and intelligence matters and economic influence.
The State of Israel is, obviously, a very important ally of the United States. It is nuclear power. It is equal to any army in the world in its ability to strike far and wide and control its region. It is a powerful intellectual force and an engine of technological excellence and ever-increasing success. If any country had to choose one powerful ally that could be called the United States, it would choose Israel.
PARENTS FIGHT BACK WITH POISON MANAGEMENT CLASSES
Israel is also a reliable and fully integrated military ally of ours. Israel is taking what the United States is doing and improving on it, as was the case with the F-35 fighter. Sometimes it takes the beginnings of technology and is developed to scale and use, like the Iron Dome and Iron Beam soon. Those developments would return to America as the Golden Dome and the Golden Beam. To what extent would Israel go into the shipbuilding business, but we have allies in South Korea and Japan who are doing just that.
Finally, and perhaps most importantly, Israel shares America’s founding values of individual liberty and democratic governance. Israel is as politically divided as the US, but freedom of speech is as strong there as it is here. Human rights are respected there as they exist. A “Western nation” by all means, despite having had to fight for its life since the establishment of the modern state in 1948.
I also quickly reminded the audience that, according to American law, both constitutional, statutory and treaty law, the United States recognizes Israel as a country with all the rights and obligations of a nation state.
THE ARREST OF BETH ISRAEL IN MISSISSIPPI DRIVES TO THE HEART OF RELIGIOUS FREEDOM, SHADOW AND SILENCE.
“Zionism” – this term was coined at the end of the 19th century to re-establish the Jewish state in the lands of the Jewish ancestors – is not a sad thing, but it is a historical movement that culminated in the fact that the United Nations recognized Israel as a state through the actions of both the General Assembly and the Security Council of this organization. The United States participated in that process and voted. Although theology may reveal some Americans’ support for Israel, belief in the law is the best and most permanent case for many Americans to side with Israel because the American law is committed to honoring Israel’s citizenship.
After the attack on Israel by Hamas from Gaza on October 7, 2023, and the mass killings and kidnappings that followed, one would have predicted the death of the majority of anti-Semitism in the West, the brutality of that day was horrific and the obvious face of Jewish hatred.
Instead, and to the shock of many, Israel’s war to return its hostages and destroy the national threat posed by Hamas has not only caused more attacks on it from Hezbollah living in Lebanon, the Houthis stuck in Yemen and the “snake’s head” in the Islamic Republic of Iran, but also a geyser of hatred for Jews in the United States.

What was once an ignored and marginalized, weird, sectarian, and conspiracy belief system suddenly became widespread and apparently much bigger than most Americans believed possible (or at least it seemed to the world on web screens.) Antisemitism and the set of ancient evils under the name Anti-Zionism is still a very sad sight in American society. 10/7 post on the American collective psyche is important as those who harbor this vile hatred feel free to express it publicly.

So it is long past time for Americans, and especially ordinary American Christians, to lay the religious charge against anti-Semitism – it is a great sin, indeed, for Catholics, a “deadly sin” – and more importantly if not, the secular charge of being a Zionist briefly stated above.
America needs a healthy polity, free of all racial and religious hatred, and it needs strong and loyal friends like Israel. These two arguments cannot be made enough in too many places, but both must be made especially within and within any institution that describes itself as “Christian.” I thank Colorado Christian University for giving me the opportunity to do so.
