Sen. Eric Schmitt, R-Mo., on Thursday renewed a proposal for his bill to expand the extradition process for people who commit fraud, serious crimes or join terrorist organizations.
Schmitt unveiled his law, the Stop Citizenship Abuse and Misrepresentation (SCAM) Act, after a Lebanese citizen rammed his car into a Michigan synagogue and a Sierra Leonean allegedly opened fire at Old Dominion University in separate incidents Thursday in the latest violent attacks on American citizens.
“After the SAVE America Act, we need to pass the SCAM Act so we can take out and deport those who are here to harm the American people,” Schmitt told X, referring to the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, which would require voters in federal elections to prove citizenship by providing a photo ID and other documents, such as a passport or birth certificate.

“We have to take out those who shouldn’t be here,” the senator continued.
Ayman Mohamad Ghazali, 41, was shot and killed by police Thursday after driving to Temple Israel in West Bloomfield Township near Detroit before the car caught fire, according to authorities.
Ghazali came to the US 15 years ago on a relative’s visa as the spouse of an American citizen and was granted citizenship in 2016, the Department of Homeland Security said.

Mohamed Bailor Jalloh, 36, served in the Virginia National Guard from 2009 until he was honorably discharged in 2015. Previously convicted of trying to aid the Islamic State, Jalloh reportedly shouted “Allahu Akbar” before opening fire in a classroom at Old Dominion University on Thursday, killing one person and wounding two others. The gunman was also killed.
In another incident at the beginning of the month, a shooting happened outside a bar in Austin, Texas, by a citizen based in this country, Ndiaga Diagne, 53, who was born in Senegal, killing three people and wounding more than ten.
Schmitt’s ISCAM Act was originally introduced in January in response to alleged fraud by Somalis in Minnesota.

“Being an American citizen is a privilege, and anyone who hopes to be a part of our great nation must demonstrate a sincere adherence to our Constitution, high character, and a commitment to the happiness and good order of the United States,” he said at the time.
“People who commit crimes, serious crimes, or join terrorist organizations such as drug cartels shortly after taking their citizenship oath fail to respect the basic values of citizenship,” the lawmaker added. “They must be denaturalized because they have proven that they have never met the requirements of the highest honor of being an American citizen in the first place. We must protect and restore the institution of American citizenship.”
