Gov. Gavin Newsom, D-Calif., called the idea that he doesn’t like former Vice President Kamala Harris “stupid,” though he seemed happy with her campaign memoir, “107 Days,” on Thursday.

“That’s the basis of the question because we do,” Newsom said on “The Axios Show.”

He pointed out that he and Harris have had a working relationship dating back decades when they started their political careers in California and even introduced him to the Democratic National Convention as “a real guarantee” of their friendship.

Axios reporter Alex Thompson revealed that Harris “shot” him in his book, saying he didn’t answer his phone after former President Joe Biden dropped out of the 2024 presidential race.

Newsom has denied such events and has flatly stated that the reported tension has “really helped book sales.”

“He gave me a little shot at the true reality of the journey I was on,” Newsom said. “And I remember texting her. I said, ‘Kamala, I’ve put out a statement in support of you. I’m the last person you need to talk to.’ But for whatever reason, he added. I think it created a certain color for the book. It certainly helped her book sales – not my part, but that book did incredibly well. “

He added that he has not read Harris’s book but “read excerpts” as he was working on his own, “Young Man in a Hurry”.

Despite his work with Harris, Newsom admitted that he understands “their relationship and that relationship” in terms of politics.

“When he goes, he goes ahead. And I’ve always understood that. And that’s great. I think the media and the commentators want to do something about that, so they’re trying to color it,” Newsom said.

Newsom and Harris are considered potential rivals in the 2028 presidential election, although neither has officially announced intentions to run. Newsom talked about the possibility of competing against each other during a CNN interview last month.

“That’s it… fate will decide that. And I’ve never gotten in the way of his desire. I never have. And I don’t think I will in the future,” Newsom said, adding, “You can only control what you can’t control.”
