Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), known as Doctors Without Borders, has suspended non-essential operations at Gaza’s Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, citing security concerns.

MSF said it took this decision, effective January 20, due to concerns with hospital management and what it described as a pattern of unacceptable incidents within the compound.

The suspension was not widely reported at the time, and it was unclear when the decision was made public.

MSF’s FAQ page, where the update appears, shows it was last updated on Feb. 11.

In recent months, the international medical aid organization said that staff and patients have reported the presence of armed and sometimes masked men, intimidation, arbitrary arrests of patients and suspected armed movements on hospital premises.

“While none of these incidents occurred in parts of the hospital where MSF works, they pose a serious safety risk to our teams and patients,” MSF wrote on its website.

“MSF has officially expressed its strong concern to the relevant authorities and emphasized the incompatibility of such violations with our medical work. Hospitals must remain neutral, public spaces, free from military presence or occupation, to ensure the safe and impartial delivery of medical care,” the group continued. “MSF calls on all armed groups, Hamas, and the Israeli army to respect medical facilities and ensure the protection of civilians.”

In a statement issued on Saturday, Nasser Hospital rejected what it called “false, unsubstantiated, and misleading allegations” by MSF about the presence of weapons or armed groups inside the facility.

“These accusations are wrong, irresponsible, and a serious threat to a protected medical facility. The Gaza Strip is under a prolonged state of emergency due to systematic attacks on public facilities,” the newspaper said. “Under these circumstances, isolated illegal acts by unregulated individuals and groups have occurred throughout the community, including attempts by some to carry weapons.”

Hospital officials said civilian police were deployed to help protect patients, staff and infrastructure and called on MSF to withdraw its claims and reaffirm its commitment to medical neutrality.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said on Sunday it had intelligence indicating that Hamas was using the Nasser Hospital as a headquarters and military base, repeating long-held allegations that the terrorist group was concentrating its operations within public institutions in Gaza.

Wounded Palestinians receive care inside the hospital's orthopedic ward, which is overcrowded due to a lack of medical supplies.

“For more than two years, the IDF and the defense organization have warned about the misuse by terrorist organizations in Gaza of hospitals and shelters as human shields to hide terrorist activities,” it wrote.

Hamas has previously denied using hospitals or other public facilities for military purposes.
