This weekend, I couldn’t be more excited to try a new one Ryan Gosling movie, Project Hail Mary.
The sci-fi story follows a science teacher (Gosling) who wakes up in space with no memory of how he got there.
While Project Hail Mary looks like a fun, sci-fi spectacle, I can’t help but take this opportunity to highlight Gosling’s low-key flick.
Nice Guys a great period comedy buddy cop starring Gosling and Russell Croweand it is still very low to this day.
Here is the reason Nice Guys is one of my favorite Gosling films and why it deserves to be your next watch.
‘Nice Guys’ is a Good Hangout Movie
Nice Guys follows private eye Holland March (Gosling), employed by Mrs. Glenn (Lois Smith) to find his missing pornstar niece, Misty Mountains (Muriel Telio), an investigation that leads March to a young woman named Amelia (Margaret Qualley). To get March off her tail, Amelia hires Jackson Healey (Crowe), a brutal vigilante, who breaks into March’s house and breaks her arm. But the mismatched March and Healey find themselves united by a shared cause when Amelia indeed he disappears, and it looks like he’s being hunted by guys who are more shy than March or Healey.
While the structure of Nice Guys sounds like a fun, twisted crime story, that’s not the main attraction of the film. In fact, the mystery of daffy is probably the most important thing about the film, and you can feel free to dismiss it immediately. Nice Guys it works best when you let the plot take a back seat and enjoy the acting, character writing and chemistry between Crowe and Gosling. Think about it The Big Lebowski or Natural Vice as opposed to a Zodiac. The nostalgic atmosphere and the focused production design create a realistic recreation of ’70s Los Angeles, the script is funny and the characters, whether they are big or small, will always surprise you. It’s a movie you’ll want to revisit again and again.
‘Nice Guys’ Gives New Life to Buddy Comedy

Warner Bros.Shane BlackBuddy’s movie evokes the buddy comedy of yesteryear, like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Planes, Trains and Cars or The Odd Couple. This is largely thanks to Black’s sharp screenwriting, which has captivated audiences many times in the past. If you don’t know the name Black, you are familiar with movies like this Long Kiss Goodnight, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang again Iron Man 3. Finally, Black understands what makes a good comic friend work. He relies less on action and spectacle (though there are a good number of good action set pieces), instead he hones in on character-driven humor, biting dialogue and admirable use of slapstick.
By de-emphasizing the complexity of the plot, Mnyamana can make a joke that really works by using his character, speed, acting and focusing on writing jokes and lines that really work. One way or another, Nice Guys it ends up feeling like the kind of movie that is no longer being made, and yet somehow this one was – this is probably part of why the movie has grown into such a beloved cult, and why fans despised the only very modest showing it made at the box office back in 2016. Of course, the real lynchpin of the film’s success as a Crowe Gosling comedy comes from buddy Gosurpring chemistry.
The Comedic Chemistry Between Gosling and Crowe Is Top-Notch

Warner Bros.When you think of Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe, you probably wouldn’t think they’d make the most natural buddy cop in a comedy film – you might not even think Crowe could do comedy at all. However, be careful Nice Guys, and he realizes that there is nothing more natural than these two actors together. Both Gosling and Crowe are best known for their strong, dramatic roles (more so than Crowe), but Nice Guys proves their wise bones. The characters themselves are perfect foils for each other as a classic type pairing: the “straight” man Healy and the cunning and cowardly March.

This human conflict is the main source of the film’s humor and why it is a classic today. Crowe and Gosling play off each other in a flash, always matching each other’s comedic timing and presenting a smart, quick-witted bird with ease. But they don’t just get great lines of dialogue; there is also plenty of slapstick and physical comedy for The Gladiator again The Notebook the characters that have to get into it. Gosling’s exaggerated cries and bathroom fight scenes are funny in their own right, but it’s Crowe’s muted reactions in these moments that serve as the cherry on top.
