The sitcom — starring Duff (Lizzie McGuire), Lalaine (Miranda Sanchez), Adam Lamberg (Gordo), Jake Thomas (Matt McGuire), Hallie Todd (Jo McGuire) and Robert Carradine (Sam McGuire) – aired from 2001 to 2004 and consisted of two seasons and 65 episodes. Duff also played the leading lady of the lovers A Lizzie McGuire film in 2003 along with several of his partners and new faces.
The show remained so popular in the years following its end that Disney+ announced a revival in August 2019. Duff agreed to reprise her role in the series, which was supposed to follow Lizzie as she tries to find life in New York City.
“Lizzie is also older, older, wiser, with a much bigger budget for shoes. She has her dream job, the perfect life right now working as an apprentice for a New York luxury decorator,” The youngest star featured on the D-23 show at the time. “[She has] the perfect man, who runs a fancy restaurant [and is] preparing to celebrate his 30th birthday.”
Duff explained her excitement about revisiting the actor on her Instagram stories. “I really have no words. It’s crazy. I really missed him,” she said. “I think now is a good time for him to come back in his thirties. He’s everyone’s best friend, and I can’t wait to continue this next chapter with him.”
Todd, Carradine, Thomas and Lamberg later joined the project, while the “So Yesterday” singer teased what fans can expect from the revival.
“Her life is completely different to Hilary – she doesn’t have kids – I thought it would be really fun to live with her,” he said. Us Weekly in November 2019. “I think it’s going to be a great combination of giving everyone what they want from the show in the past, and a brand new show and him at 30, looking completely different.”
The series hit a roadblock in January 2020 when the creator and showrunner Terry Minsky stop it. Duff later complained about “reducing the realities of a 30-year-old’s journey under the roof of a PG rating” and asked to move the show to Hulu. However, the A Cinderella story the actor announced in July 2020 that he and the broadcaster “pressed to pause” to come together on their vision.
Duff confirmed in December 2020 that the revival was not going ahead.
“I am very honored to have the character of Lizzie in my life. She has had such a long impact on many, including me. To see the loyalty and love of the fans for her, until this day, means a lot to me. I know that efforts and discussions have been everywhere trying to restart but, sadly and despite everyone’s efforts, it will not happen,” he announced on Instagram. “I want any reboot of Lizzie to be honest and true to who Lizzie could be today. That’s what a character should do. We can all take a moment to mourn the amazing woman she could have been and the adventures she could have gone on. I’m so sad, but I promise everyone tried their best and the stars didn’t align. Hey now, this is what 2020 was made of.”
In August 2022, Duff reopened the canceled project Women’s Health. “[Lizzie] he should have been 30 years old doing 30-year-old things,” the “Coming Clean” singer explained to the magazine.” They didn’t have to do bong rips and have one-night stands all the time, but it had to be true. I think they are scared.”
