Firehouse to the house
The firehouse at 4 Tait Ave. it was rezoned for residential use following a city council meeting in Jan. 15, according to Mayor Rob Moore’s press release.
The building consisted of a 2,500 square meter main building and an additional building originally built as a fire station and later used as a museum storage facility. Both buildings are currently vacant.
Los Gatos and Tait Firehouse LLC entered into an agreement in 2020, allowing the facility to remain under city control and maintain its historic value. The town did not have to spend any money on the property, but any money that might have gone into the town’s coffers.
In 2021, the city council proposed rezoning the building from single-family residential to medium-sized business to allow the building to be used for commercial purposes, but no potential tenant was found for the space.
The city proposed last year to rezone the area for middle-income housing. The planning commission recommended that the rezoning be approved in December.
