Liberal activists behind the campaign of Maine Democratic Sen. Graham Platner have acknowledged that their vetting process did not eliminate certain issues such as his controversial Nazi-related tattoo.

Wall Street Journal reporter Aaron Zitner spoke with Daniel Moraff, Leanne Fan and Morris Katz, the three activists Platner “handpicked” to challenge Sen. During the interview, which premiered Sunday, Zitner asked about the vetting process after choosing to run with Platner.

“We paid a good company a lot of money and got more back,” said Moraff. “Some things you saw in the news we came back, some we didn’t.”

“Was the vetting process responsible for the controversial tattoo?” Zitner asked.

“No,” Moraff replied.

Zitner followed up by asking whether the vetting process revealed Platner’s Reddit posts where he posted comments demeaning women and mocking the US military.

“The company sent us something, and they had some of the slots, but not all of them,” Moraff said.

Despite what he saw, Moraff insisted that none of Platner’s past comments “will stop him or stop him from being a US Senator.”

Katz similarly defended Platner’s run, saying he was better than before.

“To me, the biggest risk the Democratic Party can take is to continue doing things the same way, which has ended up with a House minority, a Senate minority, and a second term for Donald Trump,” Katz said. “And I think we’re not going to be an establishment party, an establishment party.”

He continued, “So, you know, you’re always in a position where you’re like, ‘Hey, we know you’re being targeted by everybody in power, but let’s just look at the edges there, and eventually it’ll be better.’ That’s a disjointed election strategy, and it’s failed to make things better to the extent they need to get better. So I think there’s a lot less risk in using someone like Graham Platner than using the same playbook. “

Zitner revealed in the interview that Moraff was contacted by the Wall Street Journal following Platner’s recent scandals, including reports that he sent graphic messages to several women while married and that he disclosed the behavior of women he had previously dated.
