Runway entry they are a constant threat to aviation safety as planes face collisions with other planes and vehicles on the tarmac.
An incident happened in New York LaGuardia Airport Sunday night when an Air Canada Express CRJ-900, operated by airline partner Jazz Aviation as Flight 4686, collided with a fire truck during landing. The plane was carrying 72 passengers and four crew and had arrived in New York from Montreal.
The collision killed the pilot and the first officer, according to Jazz and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, and dozens of people were reported injured. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) sent a team of experts to investigate the incident.
The horrific danger comes as in recent years the public has become increasingly aware of air raids at the nation’s airports, which occur when an aircraft, vehicle or person is improperly located in a designated landing area and takes off from an aircraft.

Data from Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) showed that there were 97 reported airport robberies in January this year – a slight decrease from the 133 reported in the same month last year, with 118 reported in January 2024 and 123 recorded in January 2023.
Of the incidents reported this January, 17 were described as operational incidents and 56 were attributed to aircraft deviations, 22 were due to deviating vehicles or pedestrians, and two were described as “other” in FAA data.

Boyd Group International President Mike Boyd told FOX Business that “this incident, as tragic as it is, is an indication of the complexity to run the airportnot so much an indication that we have a sloppy schedule. It’s just a system that fails from time to time because ‘I didn’t hear the message.’
“We depend very, very much on the people here. We depend on the people in the cockpit, not only on the technology but also on the people in the towers, and sometimes things happen,” he said.

Boyd said the collision of LaGuardia and 2024 incident in Japan when two planes collide on a runway show that although such incidents are relatively rare, there are ways in which safety systems can be improved to avoid becoming an ongoing problem.
He also added that although there were times when the traffic control systems were not as safe as needed at a certain time, they were generally safe and effective.

Boyd also said that “we have to work to make sure we have fewer runway incursions, especially now that we’ve gotten a lot better at when these things happen. We didn’t have that before. We do now — that’s a good thing.”
