Eric Dane Was Afraid To Be Taken From His Daughters

On Feb. 19, Eric Dane’s family announced that the beloved actor – known for his great roles in shows like Grey’s Anatomy again Euphoria – died at the age of 53, less than a year after sharing with the world his diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in April 2025.
“He spent his last days surrounded by his dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world,” read a statement from his loved ones. “Throughout his journey with ALS, Eric became a passionate advocate for awareness and research, determined to make a difference for others facing the same battle.”
“He will be deeply missed, and always fondly remembered,” the statement concluded. “Eric loved his fans and is always grateful for the outpouring of love and support he has received.”
As mentioned in the family message, Eric found it very important to talk openly about his ALS journey, and, after sharing his diagnosis, he engaged in conversations about his life. “It is important that I share my journey with as many people as I can because I no longer see that my life is about me,” he said at the I AM ALS event last year.
“I’m making sure that people know what ALS is and what it’s about, and most importantly, what we can do to fight it and improve the state of the country, because it’s rocky and full of obstacles and management and all this nonsense that we’re trying to sort through to get to where we’re going, and start working on a solution,” he said.
Now, after his death, Eric’s fans have revisited some of his interviews after the diagnosis, and this quote about his young daughters – 15-year-old Billie and 13-year-old Georgia, who he shares with his wife, Rebecca Gayheart – broke people’s hearts.
Back in June, in his first TV interview after sharing his diagnosis, Eric was asked by Diane Sawyer how “angry” he was about the illness. In response, the actor spoke about his father, who died when he was 7 years old. “My father was taken away when I was young and now there are many chances that I will be taken away by my daughters when they are still young.”
He continued: “I mean, really, at the end of the day, all I want to do is spend time with my family and work a little bit if I can. I don’t think this is the end of my story. I just don’t feel, in my heart, I don’t feel like this is the end of me.”
This clip of the interview has gone viral on X since Eric’s death, and people are saddened by the brutality of it all.
“Eric Dane says the worst thing about this is that his girls lost him so young in their lives the way he lost his father. Life is not fair,” reads X’s post which has more than 70,000 likes at the time of writing.
“the most brutal part of losing a parent young is spending the rest of your life trying to protect your children from the pain you carry. and knowing you can’t,” wrote one user. “She lived her whole life without him and her biggest fear was hearing from her daughters.”
“Eric Dane having 2 daughters makes me so sad, no one deserves to see their parent go down a little bit especially when they are so young,” echoed another, calling it “the worst feeling ever.”
This is really hurtful. Sending much love to Eric’s family and all who loved him. You can read his full message here.
