Straightforward microdramas are the new way to go for romance — and much of the interest comes from the hot leading men.
Many TikTok users are familiar with ads appearing on their FYPs for fanfiction-esque shows. From age-crossed romances to forbidden love stories, each series feels like a cross between a soap opera and a Lifetime movie. The point of the ads is to drive users to download apps like ReelShort and DramaBox that host short shows, usually a minute or more per episode and designed for mobile viewing.
CandyJar content – incl Nick Skonberg‘s Loving My Brother’s Best Friend again Joseph Purcell‘s Crossing My Guard – is on the rise as the majority of female viewers tune in to get their romantic fix.
“CandyJar is the only company I’ve worked with, but they really know their audience and what their audience wants. CandyJar [projects] they are very much aimed at women and women,” said Skonberg earlier Cosmopolitan. “You can see that the scripts follow a lot of the romance and the characters, but also the way they dress and the way they shoot the scenes and light the scenes. And we had a great intimacy producer, Sasha Smith. She was very specific about: ‘OK, this is the moment where you stop her with your hand or you stop her with your voice.’
