Maggie Gyllenhaal she admitted that she was worried about mixing business with her private life before dumping her husband Peter Sarsgaard in the middle The Prodigal Daughter.
Talking to The New York Times’Interview” on Friday, March 6, Gyllenhaal shared that she was initially worried about her husband playing a character who was written to have steamy sex scenes while directing the 2021 film.
“It is something working hard with my husband,” Gyllenhaal, 48, told the outlet. “We did it all the way. We did The Prodigal Daughterwhen he has a really hot love Jessie Buckley.”
He added, “And at first, I almost gave him a part.”
Gyllenhaal explained that he wondered if he could juggle his professional role as a director while looking at the reality of his real-life partner playing out the bitter scenes in front of him.
“I was like, ‘I don’t need that either.’ As well as directing a film for the first time,” he explained. “I just gave it to somebody else first, and I knew he was hurt. And I remember talking to my oldest girlfriend and this teacher. And they were both like, ‘Can’t you handle this? And I said, ‘No, I think I really can.’

“I mean, this had nothing to do with sex at all. This was about dating, which was intense and pushing and shoving and watching them make out the way real actors should, like making love,” Gyllenhaal said.
He also said he thought the match between Sarsgaard and Buckley was “good” in the end.
