Authorities have opened an investigation into the death of a mutilated man whose body was found dumped in a Massachusetts lake. Us Weekly you are educated.
Detectives identified the mutilated man as Peter Deganwho was released from prison on February 6.
Degan, 69, was arrested in 2018 and charged with trafficking and distribution of cocaine – charges he pleaded guilty to in 2019, leading to a five-year sentence inside MCI Shirley, a medium-security state prison.
When Degan was arrested, police said they found two kilograms of cocaine and $750,000 in cash at his residence.
The suspect was living in a pre-release facility in Rockland on February 27, when he was last seen alive. Police said he was reported missing not long ago.
One of Degan’s severed legs was found by a group of middle school students at Phoenix Pond in Shirley on Wednesday, March 4, according to officials. They were walking near the Veterans Memorial Bridge when they saw a closed appendage floating in the water and called 911.
Responding police found most of Degan at the scene, the Middlesex District Attorney said Marian Ryan.
“Those parts look like they were washed; that is, they were cut with a sharp knife,” Ryan said during a press conference on Thursday, March 5.
Ryan said efforts are underway to find all of Degan’s parts. Boston 25 divers were reportedly seen in the lake scooping up water to find more remains.
Police pointed to his fingers, according to detectives.
The Boston Herald he spoke to two of those youths – Brett Clapper again Dominic Dunnboth aged 15 – discussed making a painful discovery. Clapper told the daily that he, Dunn and a third friend initially thought the object in the water was part of a mannequin. However, when they looked closely, they saw that it was real.
Clapper said the leg – which he described as having been amputated below the knee – still had the foot attached to it and did not appear to have been in the water for long, showing no signs of decomposition. “It’s just messed up,” thought Clapper.
Police are trying to figure out how Degan’s remains ended up in Phoenix Pond. They said the cause of his death is pending. At this point, they have not discussed a possible motive or any suspects or persons of interest.
Shirley Police Chief Samuel Santiago emphasized that this murder, possibly, was not just a mistake.
“I know that we have many concerned citizens,” said Santiago in a press conference on Thursday. “I want to assure them that we are here for you. We are here to support you, to provide for the public safety that we have been providing.”
“Members of the public who have information about Degan or have seen anything suspicious in the past few days in the area where his body was found are asked to contact police immediately,” the district attorney’s statement read.
