According to the National Kidney Foundation, the BK virus is a common virus with symptoms similar to the flu. Once a person has a BK virus infection, the virus stays in the system for good. It usually remains inactive when a person receives a kidney transplant because of the use of anti-rejection drugs. The virus can damage the new kidney and cause the body to reject the organ.
