An autopsy on a 20-year-old University of Alabama student who went missing last week during spring break in Barcelona indicates she may have died of accidental drowning, according to a preliminary report filed by local police.
The body of James “Jimmy” Gracey, whose disappearance early last Tuesday sparked an investigation by Catalan police, was found floating in the Mediterranean Sea days later. A police report submitted to a local judge found no signs of foul play, but the final results will be available on Thursday, according to Spanish newspaper Periódico.
The native of Elmhurst, Ill., had been out with friends at the world-famous nightclub in the city’s Port Olímpic district, which is located along the beach.
A police spokesperson told Fox News that Gracey’s phone was traced to someone known to local authorities for past crimes. The man eventually determined that he had never met Gracey and was instead charged with “unlawful possession of another person’s property.”

According to this newspaper, security camera footage shows Gracey walking alone into the dock near Shoko club and then falling into the water.
The preliminary autopsy report points to drowning as the cause of death and multiple injuries to the body associated with multiple blows from broken rocks, likely during swelling.

A police spokesperson told Fox News that the investigation is ongoing and that their initial investigation is accidental death. He noted that Grace’s wallet was found to be full of cash, credit cards and papers, reducing the possibility of foul play. They also confirmed that the autopsy report did not show that Jimmy had been injured before drowning.
Fox News is still awaiting confirmation of the Spanish media’s claims and whether Gracey’s body was found with her gold chain and rhinestone cross.
