Arnold Barboza Jr Defeats Kenneth Sims Jr In 12 Round Bout

At the Honda Center in Anaheim, California, Golden Boy Promotions hosted a night of fights on DAZN Saturday night, headlined by a welterweight bout between Arnold Barboza Jr. and Kenneth “Bossman” Sims Jr. In the main event, joint minimumweight champion Oscar “El Pupilo” Collazo defended his titles against Jesus “Chiquito” Haro “Jesus.

In the main event, Arnold Barboza Jr. (33-1, 11 KOs) defeated Kenneth “Bossman” Sims Jr. (22-4-1, 8 KOs) by unanimous decision over 12 rounds to capture the vacant WBO Global welterweight title.

Barboza established an early edge, working to the body and landing consistent punches in the opening rounds. In the closing seconds of the fourth round, he landed a right hand that briefly hurt Sims.

Sims had moments of his own, including a slight knockdown in the fifth round and a clean right hand at the end of the sixth. Barboza continued to find success with lead right hands that began to produce swelling under Sims’ right eye.

Barboza remained in control through the seventh and eighth rounds, keeping Sims on the defensive. Sims struggled to slow down in the ninth and tenth rounds as Barboza continued to land right hands.

In the eleventh round, a clash of heads split open Barboza’s right eyebrow. Sims has appeared to benefit since then and may have taken the cycle. Barboza finished strong in the twelfth, raising his hands in celebration as the final seconds ticked away.

The judges scored 117-111, 118-110, and 120-108 in favor of Barboza.

Collazo retains the combined minimumweight titles

In the main event, joint WBO and WBA minimumweight champion Oscar “El Pupilo” Collazo (14-0, 11 KOs) stopped Jesus “Chiquito” Haro (13-4, 2 KOs) after six rounds of their scheduled 12-round fight.

Collazo dominated the early rounds with accurate strikes and strong pressure. In the fourth and fifth rounds, he focused on body shots that began to slow Haro down.

The sixth round continued in much the same fashion as Collazo landed repeated punches to the body and head. At the end of the round, Haro’s corner decided to stop the fight.

Rocha brings out Diaz

Former NABF and WBO NABO welterweight champion Alexis “Lex” Rocha (26-2-1, 16 KOs) defeated former IBF junior lightweight champion Joseph “JoJo” Diaz (34-9-1, 15 KOs) via a 10-round unanimous decision.

Rocha returned after a long layoff and quickly used his size advantage against Diaz, who was competing at welterweight. Rocha was better in the opening rounds and landed a few left hooks in the third.

Both fighters had moments in the middle rounds, including some body work in the fifth round and a solid sixth round from Rocha that included a left uppercut, which rocked Diaz. Diaz held back briefly in the seventh with a right hand.

Rocha finished strong in the eighth and ninth rounds. In the tenth, the crowd reacted as both fighters took turns to close out the fight.

The judges scored 97-93, 98-92, and 100-90 for Rocha.

Fundora earned a sixth-round stoppage

Unified flyweight champion Gabriela “Sweet Poison” Fundora (18-0, 10 KOs) stopped Viviana Ruiz (10-3, 5 KOs) at 1:25 of the sixth round in their scheduled 10-round fight.

Fundora used his height and gained the advantage from the opening round, working behind his jab and drawing blood from Ruiz’s mouth early. Ruiz had moments in the third round with right hands, but he continued to work hard.

Late in the fourth round, Fundira landed a left uppercut that dropped Ruiz in the 8-count. Fundora continued to control the fight and cornered Ruiz at the end of the fifth.

In the sixth round, Fundora landed a series of unanswered punches before referee Ray Corona stepped in to stop the bout.

Undercard results

Welterweight prospect Joel Iriarte (10-0, 9 KOs) stopped “Prince Rock” Dodler Myrthil (17-3-1, 13 KOs) at 2:35 of the sixth round of their scheduled eight-round fight. Iriarte scored a knockdown late in the round before the referee stopped the fight.

Middleweight Fabian Guzman (10-0, 8 KOs) defeated Julian “King Julian” Delgado (9-3, 4 KOs) by decision in eight rounds with scores of 77-75 and 79-73 twice.

Lightweight Daniel “Junebug” Garcia (13-0, 10 KOs) stopped Blas Ezequiel Caro (12-9, 5 KOs) at 2:54 of the second round after scoring a knockdown.

Welterweight Cayden Griffiths (9-0, 8 KOs) stopped Omar Ulises Gutierrez Mungia (8-4-1, 6 KOs) at 2:51 of the second round after dropping his opponent.

Super featherweight Leonardo “Bazooka” Sanchez (9-0, 7 KOs) stopped Cesar “Corazon” Juarez (31-19, 24 KOs) at 2:46 of the second round after scoring a knockdown.

The ring announcer for the event was Mark Fratto.
