Are these shoes really ‘PNW proof’? I tried them in Chambers Bay

When it comes to golf shoes, there is one thing that I consider very important and that is protection from the elements.

Even in the desert at times, golf courses can be wet places and the quickest way to ruin a good day on the course is wet socks, especially on a cold day.

That’s what impressed me about the True Linkswear Ascent PNWProof golf shoes.

I lived in Bend, Oregon, for two years and while that was on the dry side of the Cascades, I occasionally got an idea of what could be played in the Pacific Northwest.

So when I took a trip to Seattle to play Chambers Bay last fall, in NovemberI knew I needed a pair of shoes that would last my rough day.

Turns out the new Ascents were really PNW proof.

Here is my review of the shoe, looking at five aspects: stability, traction, comfort / fit, style and most important of these purposes, the elements.

Things

While I was fortunate enough to paint a beautiful fall day with temperatures in the high 50s and mostly sunny skies, the golf course was still very wet in places.

However, there was never a time when I thought I was wearing the wrong shoes, as my feet remained completely dry for the entire five-hour period. Impressive, considering there were several low areas of the golf course where we had to move golf balls because there was temporary water.

I haven’t worn the shoes in the rain yet, but with as much water as there was on the course, I’m sure these shoes are indeed PNWPproof (and backed by a 1-year warranty).

Comfort/Fit

The Ascent PNWProofs really have an advantage, being built with a truly athletic shoe platform that looks more like a trail running shoe than a golf shoe. As a result, these shoes slip on and off easily and you can keep them on your feet for hours.

Walking Chambers Bay means climbing over 21,000 steps and going up and down hills. Despite that, it’s not like I was running back to the car to change my shoes. I felt like I could get into 36 easily.

I wore a size 11, the same size as I have in other pairs of shoes.

Stability

Like most golf shoes that are built on the foundation of running shoes, the Ascents have a nice bit of traction on the outsole and I could feel my heel move just a little when I walked. But that doesn’t really bother me and adds to the comfort. Lateral stability is my main concern and I have never had a problem.

Pulling

I don’t wear spiked shoes anymore, but I’m still amazed at how much traction I can get in seemingly small spaces.

The tread pattern actually looks like a hiking shoe, and I bet these would work well on the trail, too.

Style

The shoes are offered in black, white and “Rainer” yellow, which won’t be the centerpiece of your collection, but won’t distract either.

I think the style of these shoes really fits the active vibe of good shoes for a second 18, a quick 9 or a range session.

Bottom line

Unlike most shoes in this category, the True Ascents prioritize protection from the elements without sacrificing comfort, stability or traction.
