Off Campus Showrunner Reveals Storylines He Refused to Cut

While Prime Video Off campus he certainly took liberty like a TV show, a runner Louisa Levy he insisted on recreating great literary moments.
“I know that fans, because of the trailer, might think that we’re not talking about sexual harassment, [but] that was non-negotiable,” said Levy on the Thursday, May 14, episode of “Off the Shelf”. a podcast. “There was no world where I would let that go, an important thing that makes this book unique and special.” Elle [Kennedy] you did that.
Off campus is adapted from the best-selling hockey romance series of the same name, where each book follows one of four college athletes as they find love. The first season of the Prime Video series was inspired by A feastwhere Briar University hockey captain Garrett Graham (Belmont Camel) begins a fake romance with Hannah Wells (Ela Bright) before the feelings become real. In both the book and the show, Hannah navigates an ongoing crisis after being sexually assaulted in high school.
“Hannah is a character, despite this darkness [and] It’s heavy backstory, light and bubbly and hopeful,” Levy said. “That’s what I loved about her, and I think without the darkness, the light and the twinkling it would feel flat or less interesting.”
In addition to keeping Hannah’s past alive, Levy didn’t want to cut Garrett’s childhood history of abuse.
“That will not be canceled because that is part of the things that make them perfect for each other,” said Levy. “You read about Hannah’s history on the first page of this book, we don’t [about it] At the beginning of the show because … I didn’t want Hana to be defined by that because Hana doesn’t want to be defined by that.”
He continued, “In the book you can get into his head and understand that he doesn’t want to be defined by that, but the second you put that on the table on television, the character is defined by that even if he says he doesn’t want to be. We did that, in the writer’s room, part of his arc is that he chose not to tell anyone and because he chose not to tell anyone close to him about this, and at his school without knowing … that defines him.”
Levy also made sure to enact the level of steamy scenes that fans of the books know so well.
“It’s very important to their story,” he said. “That’s not only what makes the book so much fun to read … but it’s so important to Hannah’s character journey. Like, it’s baked in. That’s rare, and a lot of romance novels make sex part but not part of the character. Elle made it part of her character arc, [which] another reason why I was so happy about these books is that they are needed.”
Off campus has already been renewed for a second season, where even Dean (Stephen Kalyn), Logan (Antonio Cipriano) or Tucker (Jalen Thomas Brooks) will lead with their love interest, Allie (Mika Abdalla), Grace (India Fowler) and Sabrina.
Off campus now streaming on Prime Video.
