Adam Carolla says Rosie O’Donnell, Kathy Griffin quit comedy to fight Trump

Adam Carolla thinks some people just pay President Donald Trump a big brain.

This comedian talked about the appearance of some public figures in Trump when he talked to Dr. Drew Pinsky on a recent episode of “The Adam & Dr. Drew Show,” saying that some politicians and celebrities have sacrificed too much to oppose the president.

“You’re a politician, and you think, ‘I’m going to make a change, and I’m going to stand up for this and I’m going to fix that,’ and all you’re doing is fighting Trump,” he said.

“That’s all you do. Gavin Newsom, Karen Bass – their full-time job is to fight Trump … it’s no longer what they want to do, ‘what does Trump want to do?’, and say ‘I’m going to go fight Trump.’

Pinsky agreed, and Carolla continued, “Rosie O’Donnell, you wanted to do comedy at one point, didn’t you? Now you’re sitting and fighting Trump. And Kathy Griffin, you wanted to do comedy, and you both can do it at a high level, but you gave it all up to fight Trump. Can you imagine?

The “Man Show” host commented, “It’s like, I didn’t like Obama, but I didn’t give up on life to fight Obama.”

Pinsky said the kinds of people Carolla talked about probably don’t have someone in their lives to say, “Hey, hey, what are you doing?” because otherwise, he suggested, “it would be difficult to continue doing it month after month.”

Carolla said that kind of person “will be kicked out of that person’s life if they start asking questions.”

He envisioned a conversation between O’Donnell and this type of friend, where the theoretical friend asked O’Donnell what he planned for the day, and he replied, “I’m going to go hit my vlog and do a tirade against Trump.”

“How about we play pickleball instead?” thought the friend saying, then, as O’Donnell, replied, “Get out of here.”

“It has to be unhealthy, unpleasant,” Pinsky said. “But there must be a reward somehow because they keep doing it, right? It gives them meaning.”

Carolla went on to argue that because comedians use their brains instead of their brawn, they can sometimes get their thoughts “in a bad way.”

“If you’re a comedian, and you have time off, and you’re not hitting the boards anymore, you know what I mean?” he said. “You’ve got money in the bank, and you can have your afternoon, and you don’t have to go out and hit the mics that night, then that mindset will start to creep into you.”

He continued, “All you have to do then is go build a gazebo. You need to get up and go out … you need a project.”

Carolla explained, “When the brain doesn’t always work in a certain way to support a certain goal … it starts to turn. And that’s a problem.”

O’Donnell has been bashing Trump on social media and in interviews since he left the US for Ireland following the 2024 presidential election.

He has asked to be removed from office several times, and in a 2025 interview, he admitted that he had promised his therapist that he would stop posting about Trump on social media, but he couldn’t follow through.

Griffin recently announced that he is “uncancelled” almost 10 years after causing a firestorm when he shared a photo of himself holding a bloody mask designed to look like Trump’s head.
