“CBS Mornings” executive producer Shawna Thomas announced Thursday that she will be leaving the show at the end of the month, saying she is “fed up” with the latest incident in the newsroom.
Thomas’ exit comes on the heels of other producers and “60 Minutes” reporter Anderson Cooper’s departure from CBS News chief Bari Weiss. While Thomas, Cooper and others have parted ways, “CBS Mornings” anchor Gayle King announced Wednesday that she has signed a contract extension to stay on, though she will have a new executive producer when the calendar flips to April.
“Today is not my last day on CBS Mornings, but it starts counting down on my slow alarm later. First of all, I am very happy Gayle King has come to an agreement and will continue to bring his bright bright face and amazing interviewing skills to CBS Mornings and CBS News. I bow to him and his talent every day and thank him for his kindness and his behavior that Thomas News has found in Digital Code.

“For five years, I’ve tried to make this show something that he and everyone else in this group want to be a part of. I want to watch. I want to learn from it,” continued Thomas. “And in return, this group has made me more thoughtful, empathetic and expanded my personal definition of storytelling. I’ve had the privilege of helping make 10 (now 12!) hours of television every week that goes out for free to people everywhere. I’ve taken that responsibility to try to inform, educate, entertain and make people care about the world around them more importantly, and I know the people here.”
Thomas said he wanted to inform his colleagues that he had made a decision that he had been thinking about for a while.
“I’m tired y’all. I’m going to thank everyone I can with my voice and my face – especially Jon Tower and Peter Burgess, who I’ll be switching things over to – in the coming weeks,” Thomas wrote.

Thomas previously spent a decade at NBC News, and also with Vice and Quibi before joining CBS News in 2021, according to his LinkedIn page.
CBS News President Tom Cibrowski confirmed that Thomas “will be leaving the broadcast at the end of this month” and that Jon Tower will temporarily host “CBS Mornings.”

“CBS Mornings,” which typically draws a much smaller audience than ABC’s “Good Morning America” and NBC’s “Today,” is expected to continue tweaking its content in an effort to boost ratings. Variety reported that the show will take a “softer form.”
Last week, veteran CBS news anchor Mary Walsh left the network in a dramatic fashion, suggesting the organization was told she intended to report on a particular political party. “CBS Evening News” anchor Alicia Hastey quit last month and suggested “a new vision that prioritizes a break from traditional broadcasting practices to embrace what has been described as “heterodox” journalism.”
CBS News has also faced layoffs in recent months as parent company Paramount aims to reduce its headcount following the merger of Paramount Global and Skydance last year.
