‘Paradise’ fans react to the death of Shailene Woodley’s character

Warning: Spoilers ahead! Do not proceed without watching the latest episode of “Paradise.”
“Paradise” fans are furious over the death of Shailene Woodley’s character.
In the latest episode of the hit Hulu show, Annie (Woodley) gave birth to a baby girl and died while she and Xavier (Sterling K. Brown) were on their trip to Atlanta to look for Xavier’s wife, Teri (Enuka Okuma).
Annie, a medical student, suffered from preeclampsia and had heavy postpartum bleeding after a premature birth.
Before she died, Annie ordered Xavier to bring her daughter to her father, Link (Thomas Doherty).
The death has outraged viewers online, with many taking to social media to weigh in on the controversial decision.
“Did they really kill off Annie in #ParadiseSeason2 ? That sh-t just pissed me off so much! Wtf,” one fan wrote on X.
One fan tweeted, “WE JUST MET ANNIE NOOO I’VE BEEN REALLY HAPPY SINCE EPISODE 1 YOU CAN’T KILL HER.”
“Oh they shouldn’t do that to Annie,” said a different viewer.
“Annie survived her whole life alone, she survived a horrible apocalypse, ONLY to die giving birth. What the hell is this show,” wrote a fourth fan.
Another person tweeted, “Raise your hand if you personally were victimized by #Paradise killing Annie.”
One fan said their “jaw was on the floor for a few minutes” after watching the episode.
“I would never have expected in a million years that Annie would die,” the viewer said.
Wooley, 34, joined the cast of “Paradise” Season 2 only to have his character killed off in the fourth episode.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Woodley said that creator Dan Fogelman warned him about his character’s tragic end.
“I knew how many episodes there were and I knew what was going to happen [in broad strokes] — I knew you would get pregnant. I knew she was going to give birth, I knew she was going to pass away,” she said.
“But I didn’t really know what that was going to look like, and what the timeline was going to be, until I read episode four.”
The “Big Little Lies” star also said that Annie’s death scene was “written so deeply and so tragically, that reading it brought out all the emotions we needed to live that day.”
Speaking to Decider, Woodley admitted he was “very tired” after filming the birth and death scene.
“We gave it our all, and our director really let us have space,” he explained. “We spent time planning and rehearsing the scene, so we knew literally where our bodies would be in space.”
Despite the plot twist, Woodley said she hopes this isn’t the end of Annie in “Paradise.”
“I’d love that. I’d really love that,” the actor said when asked about a possible future return. “The joke I used to say was, ‘Thank god it’s Dan Fogelman’s show,’ because he always brings people back over and over again.”
New episodes of “Paradise” drop Monday on Hulu.
