David Harbour broke his decision to wear a prosthetic for his dark humor DTF St. Louis.
In the new HBO show, which premiered Sunday, March 1, Harbor, 50, plays Floyd, who is involved in a complicated love triangle with wife Carol (Linda Cardellini) and our colleague Clark (Jason Bateman). Floyd is self-conscious when viewers meet him on the plane — especially after he gained weight in recent years, forcing Harbor to wear a fake belly button.
“It’s used a little bit for comedy, but I also wanted it to play like it uses food in a certain way, and play like the reality of a guy who doesn’t get hits on these sites, and different things,” Harbor said. Harbor called the prosthetic “incredible,” adding, “It’s so funny. I keep thinking about the prosthetic because … I don’t know if I really needed it. I mean, it just added [a little bit].”
He continued: “I could have just piled on a bit, and I think I would have been fine, but it was nice to have it, because there’s something about having a mask that allows you to be free.”
Port described the procedure of implanting a false belly as time-consuming.
“When it was just under my clothes, it was a suit that I could close myself, and it would be easy to take it off during lunch. However, when we had to see it, even just part of the stomach, they had to put everything on, and it took about an hour,” he explained about getting a new implant every day. “They were printed with latex, they were 30 kilos, so it’s like a vest. [that came down and] wrapped in a little love handles.”
The port recalled that spirit gum was used to attach the prosthesis as the team “put it down.” [the vest] then I wear it for a good 14 hour day of shooting. Then eventually, you’ll have to take it off, and it’ll be wet.”

However, cocreator Christian Wallace clarified in January that the moment was “by no means a perfect scene” for Thornton, 70, telling The Hollywood Reporter, “We had an on-set coordinator, and the original prosthetic he brought in made everyone laugh. We were like, ‘No.’
After seeing the size of the original implant, the staff opted for Thornton’s “more humble approach.”
“It amazes me that people think that Billy is actually doing a front nudity,” added Wallace. “So I have to say props to our close-up coordinator for making it so realistic, and to the stage crew. They had the perfect rig, as Billy called it: ‘I put my rig on.’
