movies, music and a strong community spirit – The Mercury News

LG Thrives invites the public to its Monthly Morning Movie on March 2, featuring “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” at the CineLux Los Gatos Theatre. These screens offer residents a friendly and welcoming way to socialize while supporting the historic theater of downtown Los Gatos. Doors open at 9:30 am, and everyone is welcome. The movie series also supports the broader mission of Los Gatos Thrives: to create a new intergenerational community center where residents of all ages can meet, learn, interact and participate. www.losgatosthrives.org
Los Gatos High School students are already stepping up. They formed the LG Thrives club to help champion the project, and their vision is refreshingly inclusive. “We don’t want a youth-only place,” said club president Tanner Goulden. “We want to be able to connect with people of different ages, in different stages of life. It’s all about community and filling the gaps that aren’t filled now.”
Goulden says he started this club because he wants to see a community center succeed. “It takes a lot of community involvement to pull off a big project like this. It’s been great to go from not knowing a lot about how the city works to meeting and working with a lot of the people who make the city what it is. Those people are the reason we’re talking about it now.” The full community center report is available at lgcommunitycenter.org.
Another local institution, the Los Gatos History Club, recently held a ribbon cutting for its “Buy a Brick” program. Residents can commemorate a special occasion, honor a friend or family member, or remember a loved one by purchasing a personalized brick. Bricks are prominently placed in front of the clubhouse.
“Our family bought memorial bricks for my late husband Joseph Melehan and his brother, John Melehan, who both grew up in Los Gatos since 1950,” said Celeste Martin Melehan. Having their names in front of the club, which has been around for 125 years, was a fitting place for them to be honoured.
The clubhouse is available for private hire, providing a setting for weddings, anniversaries, business meetings and social gatherings. www.historyclublosgatos.org
On Saturday, March 7, the Los Gatos-Monte Sereno Police Foundation will host its Black Friday Fundraiser Ball at Testarossa Winery. The event has sold out year after year, drawing city leaders and longtime fans to a great night benefiting public safety programs. Foundation president Johnathan Knowles says the 2026 event is poised to build on last year’s success. “Our goal is to support our community by providing funds for public safety equipment and educational outreach,” he notes, adding that he expects this year’s fundraising to exceed last year’s total. www.lgmspolicefoundation.org
