Sheriff Speaks Out of Claim Covered by Subject Visited at Nancy Guthrie’s Home Days Ago

UPDATED: 2/23/26 at 10:30 pm ET – The Pima County Sheriff’s Department issued a statement addressing reports that the subject was masked. This is Nancy Guthrie’s place Suspects of kidnapping visited him at home before his disappearance.

“Suspect Image: We are aware that doorbell images released early in the investigation show the suspect in various states of clothing, including with and without a backpack,” the statement on Monday, February 23, reads. “There is no date or time stamp associated with these photos. Therefore, any suggestion that the photos were taken on different dates is pure speculation.”

The statement noted that Guthrie’s case remains an “ongoing and ongoing criminal investigation,” and “as with any investigation, conclusions will be guided by corroborating evidence and established facts.”

ABC News reported on Monday, February 23, that the photos released by the FBI from the Nancy’s Nest doorbell camera, where the suspect is wearing a backpack, are from the day before his alleged kidnapping on Sunday, February 1, after the 84-year-old was reported missing by his family after missing a church service.

Some photos showing the suspect without a backpack, are said to have been taken the day before the alleged kidnapping.

Nancy was last seen by her family on January 31 after being dropped off by family members in Tucson, Arizona. (Nancy shares with daughters Savannah Guthrie again Annie Guthrie and a son Cameron Guthrie and late husband Charles Guthrie.)

Savannah, 54, and her siblings spoke out asking for help in finding their mother.

“We believe our mother is still out there. We need your help. Law enforcement is working hard day and night, trying to bring her home, trying to find her,” Savannah said in a video shared on Instagram earlier this month. “He’s been taken, and we don’t know where, and we need your help. So, I’m just coming to ask you, not just for your prayers, but no matter where you are, even if you’re far from Tucson, if you see anything, hear anything, if anything at all seems strange to you, to report it to law enforcement.”

On February 12, the FBI released surveillance photos obtained from Nancy’s home. Photos and videos showed the subject allegedly wearing black clothing and a ski mask while carrying a black backpack. In the photos, an unknown person can be seen trying to block Nancy’s camera.

The FBI described the subject as “male, approximately 5’9” – 5’10” tall, with a medium build” and was seen “wearing a black, 25-liter ‘Ozark Trail Hiker Pack’ backpack.”

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said the backpack could be a clue in the search for Nancy.

“That backpack, now we can only identify it as a bag that was sold at one location. That’s Walmart,” he told NBC News in an interview released Tuesday, February 17. “So we’re working with our Walmart managers across the country to try to find
how many sales are there for that bag in the last 20, 30, 60 days.”

(Following reports that the backpack was found by an Arizona search party earlier this month, Nanos confirmed on Monday, February 23, an episode of Today indicate that the bag found was not the appropriate item the authorities were searching for.)

Officials confirmed on Friday, February 20, that they have received more than 12,000 tips from the public related to Nancy’s disappearance. The reward has been doubled from $100,000 to $200,000 following an offer made to the local 88-CRIME tip line for any information leading to Nancy’s rescue or recovery. Several alleged ransom notes demanding payment in bitcoin have also been investigated by the FBI.

Earlier, Nanos said that they believed that the alleged kidnapping of Nancy was intentional.

“I think this was a person who was targeted for whatever reason, and he made it difficult, but I have strong investigators with me,” he said on the Today program on Wednesday, February 18, broadcast. “As long as we have the ability to chase those who lead it is not cold, we will not give up, we will find Nancy, we will find out who did this.
