Eric Dane Has Died on the 20th Anniversary of His First Grey’s Anatomy Episode

Eric Dane he died at the age of 20 and first appeared in Grey’s Anatomy.
Dane’s loved ones confirmed his death in a statement on Thursday, February 19, after his battle with ALS, noting that the actor “spent his last days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world.”
On this day he also turned 20 years old when he first appeared on ABC Grey’s Anatomy. Dane was introduced in the role of Dr. Mark Sloan in season 2, episode 18 – titled “Yesterday” – which aired on February 19, 2006.
“Mark Sloan (McSteamy) arrives at Seattle Grace, forcing Derek and Addison to confront their past,” the episode’s synopsis read at the time.
Dane returned one season later in a major role and remained on the show until 2012. His character eventually died from injuries sustained in a plane crash.
“I think I’ve been let go,” Dane said in an episode of “Armchair Expert” in 2024 while reflecting on his exit from the series.
Dane also opened up about his struggles with addiction after entering rehab in 2011. He emphasized that the producers of the show “didn’t let me go because of that.”
“Even though it didn’t help, I was starting to become a champion – as most of these actors have spent a lot of time on the show, you start to pay more for the network,” he explained. “And the network knows that the show is going to do what it’s going to do regardless of who it’s going to go on with. As long as they have their Grey, they’re good.”

He concluded by saying: “I was not the guy they hired, so I went straight when I was let go. [executive producer] Shonda [Rhimes] it was really good. He protected us fiercely. He publicly defended us. He protected us in secret. … But maybe I was fired. It wasn’t like a ceremony saying, ‘You’re fired,’ it was like, ‘You’re not coming back.’
Dane eventually got sober and continued to book roles in shows like this one Euphoria again Counting down. He announced his battle with ALS in April 2025, just before production began on the third and final season of Euphoria.
Before his death, Dane was outspoken about his experience with the diagnosis, joining organizations like I AM ALS to raise awareness. He was honored by I AM ALS in a heartfelt statement on Thursday.
“We are saddened by the passing of our friend Eric Dane – a fierce lawyer, a generous spirit, and a true hero in the fight to end ALS. Eric used his platform not for attention, but for action,” said their message. “From the moment he joined II AM ALS, he showed courage and conviction, asking how he could use his great power to help the organization grow. It was an honor to interview him, to walk with him in the halls of Congress on behalf of our community, to raise the urgent need for ACT for ALS and research funding, and to drive for a cure and, finally, it does not cost that ALS is understood; families, answers, and change.”
The organization has promised to continue Dane’s legacy.
“Eric brought humility, humor, and visibility to ALS and reminded the world that progress is possible when we refuse to remain silent,” their statement continued. “Eric was more than a supporter of our work – he was part of our family. His impact will live on in the research funded, policies developed, and the community he helped grow through his honesty, his courage, and his belief in a better future for anyone facing this diagnosis.”
The statement concluded: “We honor Eric for continuing the work he believed in so deeply: bringing communities together, driving critical research, securing critical funding, and fighting tirelessly to find real solutions. Our thoughts are with our loved ones and our entire community. I AM ALS will continue his legacy – until ALS is gone.”
