‘Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ Deepens Dunk’s Backstory: Who Plays Rafe? Why is Ser Arlan Singing in Dothraki?

Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Episode 5 “In the Name of Mother” tells two important stories. We get to find out who lives, dies, and who is found guilty or innocent in the Trial of the Seven for Ser Duncan the Tall (Peter Claffey), and we also get to learn how young Dunk (Bamber Todd) of Flea Bottom became Ser Arlan of Pennytree’s (Danny Webb) squire in the first place.

In George RR Martin’s novels “Dunk and Egg”, we learn that Ser Duncan the Tall began as an orphaned boy named “Dunk” in Flea Bottom, a poor slum in King’s Landing. In “The Hedge Knight,” he tells people that he has been Ser Arlan’s squire since he was five or six years old. The hero had saved him from “the students of Flea Bottom.” However, in the third book, we get a few more details from Dunk’s childhood that suggest he spent a lot longer on the streets than that.
At the beginning of “The Mystery Knight,” Dunk sees a head on a spike in the Stoney Sept and it makes him remember many, many, many the same heads he saw (and played with!) as a child in the Lord’s place. He remembers his three best friends, “little monsters” named Ferret, Rafe, and Pudding. The children managed to get the head off the spike and started a game where they chased the girls to kiss the rotting body part.
“That head was kissed a lot, as he remembers,” Martin wrote. “There was no girl in King’s Landing who could run as fast as Rafe.”

While many fans thought Rafe was a boy, the HBO show recasts the character as a smart, intelligent girl played Dune: Prophecy The famous Chloe Lea. He is Dunk’s best friend and his fierce protector in the chaos of the Blackfyre Rebellion.
If you find yourself confused as to why little Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell) is singing a silly children’s song at the beginning of the show about Prince Baelor (Bertie Carvell) and Prince Maekar (Sam Spruell) defeating the Blackfyres (or why he’s daydreaming about killing Blackfyre pretenders), it’s because before Egg was born, there was a civil war. The unworthy king Aegon approved all his many bastards on his deathbed, putting succession to the iron throne up in the air. Half of the kingdom sided with Daemon Blackfyre and the other remained loyal to the legitimate Targaryens.
While the Targaryens eventually took the Iron Throne, many minor characters, including Dunk, grew up in Armageddon. We meet young Dunk and young Rafe scavenging war corpses as children to save enough money to leave Westeros for good.
When Rafe encounters the corrupt Goldcloak played by Edward Davis, he orchestrates a series of events that will lead to his death at the hands of the City Watch. Dunk is injured in the battle, but is saved by a noble, drunken hedge knight who kills the annoying Goldcloaks. Surprised and alone, young Dunk follows this mighty warrior, Ser Arlan of Pennytree, from a distance until the old man takes him under his wing with one command: “Arise.” Ser Duncan the Tall’s memory of this event helps him defeat Aerion (Finn Bennett).

What is Ser Arlan of Pennytree Chanting in Dothraki e Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Episode 5?
Confused by what Ser Arlan of Pennytree, a knight who grew up masturbating in the middle of Westeros’s Riverlands, might be singing in another tongue around the fire? Well, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms showrunner Ira Parker spilled the beans on DECIDER.
He said: “Actually, it’s Dothraki, and there are alphabets for anyone who cares to translate them.
Parker explained that the song is “about something that happens that’s hard to deal with and move on from.”
“Perhaps someone taught Ser Arlan the way on his many, many journeys when he was a young man and he is using it now that his squire’s nephew was recently killed,” said Parker. “Obviously you’re drinking too much and trying to get those devils to die.”
