DHS slams ‘activist judge’ for acquitting four illegal immigrants with prior murder and child sex crimes convictions: ‘Inexcusable negligence’

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) criticized a federal judge in Louisiana on Wednesday for ordering the release of four illegal immigrants, including those with attempted murder and child sex crimes, from an ICE detention facility.
The four men all have disturbing rap sheets and were released from ICE’s “Louisiana Lockup” at the Angola prison pursuant to a judge’s order, according to DHS.
“Judge John deGravelles, a Barack Obama appointee, released FOUR violent criminals back into American communities, and unfortunately, the results will be the continued rape, murder, assault and robbery of many American victims,” DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement.
The exempted persons are:
Ibrahim Ali Mohammed, an Ethiopian national who was issued a final order of removal in September 2024 and is guilty of child sexual abuse, according to DHS.
Luis Gaston-Sanchez, described by DHS as an illegal immigrant from Cuba with charges of murder, assault, resisting a police officer, concealing stolen property and two counts of robbery, was issued a final order of removal in September 2001.
Ricardo Blanco Chomat, also from Cuba, has previous convictions for murder, kidnapping, aggravated assault with a firearm, burglary, robbery, theft and cocaine trafficking, according to DHS. An immigration judge issued a final order for his removal in March 2002.
Francisco Rodriguez-Romero, also from Cuba, has also been convicted of murder and weapons charges, the department said, noting that his last removal order was issued in May 1995.
Verite News, a nonprofit news outlet in New Orleans, reported that Rodriguez-Romero was convicted of “involuntary manslaughter,” while the most serious charges involving Gaston-Sanchez and Chomat were attempted murder.
The immigration rights group representing the four men did not respond to The Post’s request.
deGravelles found that the Trump administration has detained immigrants “unlawfully,” writing that detentions for more than six months are “constitutionally suspect” and that “their deportations are not foreseeable.
DHS noted that despite a “historic number of activist judge rulings,” the department is “working quickly and overtime to move these immigrants from detention centers to their final destination—home.”
“Releasing these monsters is reckless for no reason,” McLaughlin said. “President Trump and Secretary Noem are now enforcing the law and arresting illegal aliens who have no right to be in our country.
“We apply the law as it is written. If the immigration judge finds that the alien does not have the right to be in this country, we will remove him. Time.”
