The House of Representatives passed a major election reform bill on Wednesday despite opposition from most Democrats.

The House passed Representative Chip Roy’s SAVE America Act, a law aimed at keeping non-citizens from voting in US general elections.

It is an updated version of the Protecting American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, led by Roy, R-Texas, which passed the House in April 2025 but was not taken up in the Senate.

While the SAVE Act would create a new state proof of citizenship requirement in the voter registration process and impose requirements on states to keep their rolls clear of ineligible voters, the revised bill would require photo ID to vote in any state. organization election.

It would also require information sharing between state election officials and federal authorities in verifying citizenship on current voter rolls and empower the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to prosecute immigration cases if noncitizens are found to be listed as eligible to vote.

The Democrats have it attacked the bill as similarly voter suppression, while Republicans argue that it is necessary after the influx of millions of illegal immigrants who came to the US during the four years of the Biden administration.

“If we want to rebuild confidence in American elections, we need to pass the SAVE Act,” Rep. Mike Haridopolos, R-Fla., told Fox News Digital. “What better way to end that mistrust than to make sure that anyone who votes is an American citizen who is actually eligible to vote?”

House Minority Whip Katherine Clark, D-Mass., accused Republicans of trying to make it harder for women to vote. He said this law will make it difficult for married women to vote if their last name is different from their last name on their birth certificate.

“Republicans are not worried about people who are not citizens who vote. They are afraid of real citizens of America who vote. Why? Because they are losing among women,” said Clark during a debate on the floor of the House. “This is a red tape you have put in front of women and American citizens and their right to vote.”

REPUBLICANS, TRUMP HIT SENATE LINE ON VOTER ID BILL

But House GOP Policy Committee Chairman Kevin Hern, R-Okla., insisted it was about keeping illegal immigrants from voting in US elections.

“This is about feeding the narrative that Democrats are illegally demanding the rest of the world come here to support them,” Hern said of the Democrats’ opposition.

Once implemented, the bill could see new requirements placed on voters in this year’s midterm elections in November.

But it would have to pass the Senate, where current rules say at least a few Democrats are needed to meet the 60-vote threshold to defeat a filibuster.
