Representation of women and minorities in movies will plummet by 2025, according to UCLA’s latest Hollywood Diversity Report.
Since 2014, UCLA has released an annual report that examines the diversity among lead talent, writers and directors of films and theatrical movies widely released on streaming services. Part 1, which focused on theatrical films, was released in March and Part 2, which focused only on broadcast films, was released on Wednesday.
In terms of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) representation, UCLA found that minority representation in leadership roles will continue to decline sharply by 2024.

“After peaking in 2023, BIPOC’s share of leading roles in top theatrical films continues to decline,” the report reads. “Compared to the previous year, this share decreased by almost two percentage points to 23.1 percent in 2025. The share of the best film starring BIPOC actors reached just over half of what would be needed for equal representation compared to their share of 45.2 percent of the US population in 2025.”
The representation of women also decreased from 47.6% in 2024 to 37% in 2025 with similar low rates for all directors and overall representation of actors.

“Comprising just over half of the population, women remain underrepresented in all major theatrical film employment platforms in 2025,” the report reads.

Minority representation also saw a sharp decline in lead roles in films released in 2025 after reaching a record high in 2024.
“The share of BIPOC leads in films from major streamers has dropped significantly to 36% in 2025 after reaching a peak of 51% in 2024. Given that 45.2% of the US population was BIPOC in 2025, leading BIPOC actors fall under relative representation (9.2 percent for the first three percent).

In contrast, women were overrepresented as leads in broadcast films, even seeing a decline from 61% to 58.4% in 2025.
The report concluded with the importance of increasing opportunities for minority actors and filmmakers not only to increase profits but also to benefit society.

“People want stories they can relate to and connect with in the movies they watch. In a society where people are increasingly disconnected from each other in person, film gives people the opportunity to connect with others they may never meet in real life and helps them understand their shared humanity. This is why meaningful representation in film is so important and why Hollywood must adapt to meet this need,” the report concluded.
