DOJ Launches Criminal Investigation Involving E. Jean Carroll

The Department of Justice launched a criminal investigation involving E. Jean Carrollwho had previously accused the President Donald Trump of sexual harassment.

CNN reported that the Justice Department is looking into whether Carroll, 82, perjured testimony in two of his civil suits against the president. Carroll previously sued Trump, 79, for allegedly sexually assaulting her in a store dressing room in the 1990s and for defamation in 2019 while he denied the allegations.

The Justice Department’s investigation focuses on a statement Carroll made during his 2022 report. The journalist stated that he did not receive any money without his fault. However, it was later revealed that he is a billionaire Reid Hoffman paid some of his legal fees and expenses for his nonprofit.

Attorney General Todd Blanche You have withdrawn from the investigation, according to the way out. Before replacing Pam BondiBlanche served as one of Trump’s attorneys in the Carroll case. The investigation will be assisted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Illinois in Chicago.

A source with knowledge of the case recounts Us Weekly that Carroll is “not a matter of investigation.”

“The investigation is related to his impeachment and perjury but is more focused on Reid Hoffman’s nonprofit,” the insider explained.

A spokesperson for the Department of Justice said Us that “they do not comment on the investigation.”

Us reached out to Carroll’s spokesperson for comment.

Carroll’s legal problems with Trump began in 2019 when a reporter accused him of rape. Trump denied the allegations while saying Carroll was not his type and accused him of making up the assault allegations to boost sales of his book.

Trump and Carroll are set to go on trial in 2023. The judge found that Carroll did not prove that Trump raped her, but he did prove that Trump was guilty of a lesser charge of sexual assault. They also found that Trump defamed Carroll with false statements made with actual malice. Carroll was awarded $5 million in damages from Trump. Later that year, Trump appealed the decision and a judge denied his request for a new trial.

A year later, Trump and Carroll are back in court for his defamation lawsuit. In January 2024, a jury awarded Carroll $11 million in defamation, $7.3 million in emotional distress and $65 million in punitive damages.

After news broke of the result, Trump took to social media to criticize the decision.

“It makes no sense! I completely disagree with both of these decisions, and I will appeal the entire decision. [Joe] Biden Directed Witch Hunt centered on me and the Republican Party,” he wrote on Truth Social. They have taken away all First Amendment Rights. THIS IS NOT AMERICA!”
