Kelly Ripa Shuts Down Mark Consuelos ‘Live’ After Shih Tzus Are Considered Dumb Dogs: “Lena Is A Smart Dog”

Kelly Ripa wasn’t putting up with any shih tzu slander on Wednesday Stay with Kelly and Mark.

Live honored National Rescue Day on Wednesday by putting some dogs up for adoption. While Mark Consuelos reminded Ripa not to “get ideas” about bringing another dog home, Live EP Michael Gelman said the dogs “may be too big” for the likes of Ripa and Consuelos, and that “there are no shih tzus” among the group.

Consuelos, who took a moment to highlight her love of shih tzus, told viewers about something she learned—or rather, saw on Instagram—”a tower of super smart dogs.” He reveals that the shih tzu is “down” the tower, confusing Ripa.

“No!” he exclaimed.

Gelman, who is also the proud owner of a shih tzu, said his wife Laurie had the same reaction.

“It depends on the tower you’re looking at.” I always say that to Laurie, and she gets really upset and says, ‘That’s not true!'” he said. “And some polls show them higher.”

Anyway, Ripa then went on to hit the sweet spot.

“No, I think it’s because shih tzus decide when they want to activate their brains,” he insisted. “It’s like if your shih tzu ignores you, it ignores you.

Consuelos and Ripa add that shih tzus are bred from “royal dogs” that are “real dogs.”

“My job is to sit here and let you pet me. And if you stop, I’m going to sneeze in your face,” he laughed. “I’ll also stalk you when you stop because you’re not done yet. Go on.”

Ripa said that her dog with Consuelos, Lena, “trained us,” and insisted that she is “smart.”

“Lena is a smart dog,” he added.

Despite his love for Lena, Consuelos disputed Ripa’s claim, citing Lena’s difficulty playing fetch.

“I mean, something to pick up,” he elaborated. If you throw it and you don’t, it’s like looking around instead of looking at your hand.

While Ripa said Lena “always” returns the ball to her, Consuelos said this is only “sometimes” when she plays with her.

“For the first time, he will bring it back to its full length,” said Consuelos. “And then the next four, five times, he drops it a few feet away, so you have to get up.”

But Ripa gave an explanation for this.

“See, you don’t sit down with him like I do. I get down. I’m a dog. I’m a shih tzu as far as he’s concerned,” he told Consuelos, before he became a victim. “Look, you might think it’s your dog. All mine, because you know. Because at night, I whisper to him, ‘Remember, daddy didn’t want you.’

Consuelos admitted, “It’s true, it’s true, I didn’t want this dog.”

Ripa replied, “Now she’s in your life. Now what’s going on?”

Consuelos declared that he was a “shih tzu man,” which resulted in a huge compliment from Ripa.

“It takes a big man to be a shih tzu man,” he quipped.
