Today is the first Monday in May, and that can only mean one thing—it’s time for the Met Gala, also known as fashion’s biggest night. Tonight, guests who have earned the coveted invitation to the annual fête will head to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, bringing with them jaw-dropping costumes and suffocating traffic on Fifth Avenue.
The Met Gala benefits the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, and as usual, the night’s theme is matched by the Met’s corresponding exhibition—this year, the deceptively simple “Costume Art.” The program will focus on images of the clothed body across the Met’s curatorial departments, which include fashion and works of art. This year’s show will also mark the unveiling of the Costume Institute’s new home, the Condé M. Nast Galleries: an 11,500-square-foot space (formerly the museum’s gift shop).
The dress code tonight is “Fashion Is Art,” which, per Vogue, encourages visitors to “consider the many ways designers use the body as their blank canvas.” While the guest list is still being finalized until attendees start walking up the Met Gala stairs, we do know that Beyoncé, Nicole Kidman and Venus Williams could be chairing the event, along with Anna Wintour. Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez, lead sponsors of both the gala and the show, are honorary chairs. Similar to last year, the 2026 Met Gala brought back the tradition of the host committee; co-chairs are Anthony Vaccarello and Zoë Kravitz, and members include Adut Akech, Angela Bassett, Sinéad Burke, Sabrina Carpenter, Doja Cat, Gwendoline Christie, Misty Copeland, Alex Consani, Elizabeth Debicki, Lena Dunham, Paloma Elsesser, Rebecca Hall, Lisa Aimechra, Tsloe Aimech Shell, Tsée Aimeell Self, Sam Smith, Teyana Taylor, Anna Weyant, Lauren Wasser, A’ja Wilson, Chase Sui Wonders and Yseult.
