Streep stars as Mary Fisher, a rich and successful romance novelist who has everything in life except what she writes about – love. Bob soon abandons his angry wife, Ruth (Roseanne), and his children to be with Mary, but Ruth does not go quietly into that good night. Streep has all kinds of fun playing the purposefully over-the-top Mary, whose flamboyant taste in jewelry (she loves the color pink) is matched only by her pseudo-patrician demeanor. Most are laughing The Devil from watching Mary’s flawless life slowly crumble as Bob unwittingly turns her on her worst enemy—Ruth! It is not wrong to think that if The Devil If it hadn’t happened, we wouldn’t have found Streep in future comics like that Death Be Him and, yes, The Devil Wears Prada.
2. ‘Death Becomes Him’ (1992)
Some may argue that Death Be Him it is as well measured as the old religion, and it is infallible. Any movie that can spawn a hit Broadway musical and inspire so many drag queens must have done something right. But the 1992 comedy still isn’t as popular as other female-driven comedy flicks. Brides.
Time to right this wrong. Death Be Him a dark comedy about the decades-long hatred between frenemies Madeline Ashton (Meryl Streep) and Helen Sharp (Goldie Hawn). Madeline steals Helen’s husband, Ernest Menville (Bruce Willis), and he will do anything to get back to his former friend, and that includes drinking a magical potion that will give him eternal life. Madeline also takes medicine, but what happens when she dies? Madeline and Helen find out the hard way that life isn’t so much fun when you have to fix a broken neck or a gunshot wound to your stomach forever.

Complete Everett collection/courtesyIt’s full of great lines like “NOW a warning” and “Wrinkled, wrinkled little star… I hope they don’t see the scars.,” Death Be Him is a comedy about the lengths people will go to in order to look young and beautiful. That’s even more of a topic in 2026, when fillers, lookmaxxing and Ozempic are all the rage in Hollywood and even middle America. The film also features thrilling visual effects and an epic musical number featuring our very own Meryl singing and dancing to disco music (!) Tennessee Williamsclassic game, Sweet Bird of Youth. Like that number, Death Be Him brassy, slightly chintzy and funny from start to finish.

It also received a number of negative reviews, with the consensus that the story, about a brief affair between a married Italian housewife and National Geographic photographer in the 1960s in Iowa, it was simple, formulaic and just plain bad.
