Artemis II recently sent back amazing images of our home planet

As the world’s 8 billion citizens look to the skies, NASA’s Artemis II mission team is looking back with great optimism.

The mission’s Orion spacecraft returned its first image of Earth yesterday, a beautiful image of a piece of Earth peeking through the dark expanse of space, and the crew gave us even more stunning high-quality images today.

The new images of Artemis II – featuring the first shots of the spacecraft hurtling into Earth’s orbit, surrounded by the glittering, space ice – have left the public in awe, filled with an overwhelming sense of emotion as the astronauts look back at our home.

Team Artemis II – Commander Reid Wiseman, mechanics Christina Koch and Jeremy Hansen, and pilot Victor Glover – they include the first woman and the first Black astronaut to go to the moon. For many, a diverse team represents the best of what humanity can offer, the pinnacle of human ingenuity and courage.

“Trust us: You look amazing, you look beautiful, and from up here, you look like one,” Glover said during the broadcast on Flight Day 2. “We’re all one person.”

The epic, epic mission to the moon will take them farther than any man has ever walked in space. Hopefully it will be the first in a series of efforts to get us back to the moon – and back to the Apollo years. And it begins.

Well, we all are. Blue marble. For those who need a little orientation: The large landmass you see in the center-left is Africa. The thin line of green light at the top right and bottom left? The aurora borealis, hovers above us earthlings and lights up our skies as Artemis II sails by.
