Nancy Metayer Bowen, vice mayor of Coral Springs and vice chair of the Florida Democratic Party, was found dead in her home in what police are investigating as a domestic violence incident as her husband, Steven Bowen, is currently in custody.

The husband of the vice chair of the Florida Democratic Party has been charged with first degree murder and tampering with evidence after his wife was found dead, according to jail records.
Investigators confirmed that Florida Democratic Party Vice Chairwoman and Coral Springs Vice Mayor Nancy Metayer Bowen was found around 10:00 a.m. during a welfare check.
Few details have been released about his death, including the cause.
On Thursday morning, Stephen Bowen appeared before a judge in bond court where he was ordered held without bond.

“I have considered the affidavit that may be the reason. The court finds the reason for the charges,” said the judge.
Bowen was first elected to the Coral Springs City Commission in 2020 and re-elected in 2024. He was appointed by the commission last November to serve a second, one-year term as vice mayor, according to his biography on the city’s website.
Before being selected commissionBowen worked as a former environmental scientist for the Broward County Soil and Water Conservation District, the South Florida Sun Sentinel reported.

Bowen’s family confirmed his death on his social media accounts.
“Throughout his years in public office, he led with integrity, compassion and a never-ending sense of purpose,” the family said in a statement.
“He believed in bringing people together, listening to those he worshipped, and working hard to make a positive change in his community. To us, he was a source of strength, wisdom, and love – someone who always put others before himself.
“Although many knew her as a leader and advocate, we knew her as a sister, daughter, and friend whose warmth and laughter filled every room. Her legacy will live on not only in the principles she helped shape, but also in the countless lives she touched.”

The Coral Springs government’s Facebook page paid tribute to Bowen, calling him “leadership based on compassion, strength, and an unwavering commitment to others.”
“His impact on Coral Springs is immeasurable, and his loss leaves a void in our hearts. We ask that our community keep his family, loved ones, and all those grieving in your thoughts and prayers. In this difficult time, we stand together as one city. We will carry his light, even in this darkness.”

US Attorney. Maxwell Alejandro FrostD-Fla., said he was saddened to hear of Bowen’s death, remembering him as “a tireless advocate, a dedicated progressive leader, and a powerful voice in his community.”

Attorney Jared Moskowitz posted on X: “I’m shocked. I was just with him on Saturday. He just buried his brother, he was going to announce that he will run for Congress.”
“Nancy was one of the nicest people I ever worked with,” he said. “He is always fighting for his community, always pushing to help. He had such a future. This is bad.”

Florida Democratic Party Chairwoman Nikki Fried said she spoke with Bowen a few days ago.

“I held his arm at the party’s leadership conference, I never thought it would be our last time together,” Fried said in a statement.
