Grey’s Anatomy Stars Who Are – And Are Not – Returning For Season 23

Grey’s Anatomy is returning for season 23 – but not all cast members are guaranteed to reprise their roles after multiple departures.

The medical drama has faced many challenges this season alone. After the shocking death of Monica (Natalie Morales) at the beginning of the season, Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) chose to take a sabbatical. It was then reported that Scorson’s leave will last until the end of 2025 as a result of the austerity measure.

The show has already reduced the minimum guarantees of its veteran cast to 14 of the show’s 18 episodes per season. While some of the Grey’s AnatomyFixed stars will be absent for four episodes, Scorone’s absence was doubled.

A runner Meg Marinis He previously revealed that not all the characters will be safe this season.

“But even in the last two seasons with what you have seen this year, we had to reduce the cast a bit [because of industry-wide budget cuts]and everyone has romantic feelings for their favorite characters,” Marinis told The Hollywood Reporter in May 2025. “But if we can upset the writers, we know we’re doing it right. It’s not a satisfying story if people don’t feel bad when someone leaves. It’s supposed to make people angry and sad, so I’m sure there will be arguments. But I have been persuaded before to change my mind about things.”

News came out in March 2026 that Kevin McKidd again Kim Raver will leave the show in a shocking way. Creator Shonda Rhimes later revealed how the season will wrap up for Teddy (Raver) and Owen (McKidd).

“Over the years, we’ve had the privilege of watching Owen and Teddy’s love story evolve and deepen — two characters who always seem to find their way back to each other. It’s both bittersweet and exciting to give this couple the happy ending their story deserves,” he chuckled in a statement. “Kevin and Kim bring incredible talent, uniqueness and heart to their roles as Owen and Teddy. Their contributions left an indelible mark on Grey’s Anatomy, both in front of and behind the camera. I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to work with them both and to see them shine.”

He concluded: “While we will all miss seeing them in the halls of Gray Sloan Memorial each day, I am excited to witness where Kim and Kevin’s journey will take them in the future.”

Ellen Pompeo

The actor is expected to return at least in voiceover form but possibly on screen and in a limited capacity.

Chandra Wilson

Chandra Wilson is one of the OG characters left on the show and is currently slated to return.

Kevin McKidd

“Grey’s Anatomy has been a huge chapter in my life, creatively and personally, and I’m so grateful for everything the show has given me over the years,” Kevin McKidd said in a statement in March 2026. “Playing Dr. Owen Hunt and directing the show have both been incredibly rewarding, and I’ve been incredibly privileged during that amazing time to work with the people of Shonda. Rhimes for creating Owen, and for the encouragement he’s given me as I move into directing.”

He continued: “As that chapter closes, I look forward to what lies ahead—creating new work, telling new stories and taking everything I’ve learned into the next phase of my career.”

Kim Raver

Besides Kevin McKidd, Kim Raver is also leaving the show after playing Teddy since 2006.

“Playing Dr. Teddy Altman will always hold a dear and special place in my heart. Sixteen years ago, I had the incredible privilege of stepping into this role thanks to the vision of Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers,” he wrote in his statement. “Since that day, it has been a true gift to express the incredible words of Shonda and our brilliant writing team. … To the fans – your unwavering dedication and support is the reason this show stays strong. Thank you for making this my magical place and my home.”

James Pickens Jr.

Meanwhile, James Pickens Jr. is in line to reprise his role after Richard suffers a health scare.

Caterina Scorsone

Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) chose to take a sabbatical earlier in the season while grieving the death of Monica Beltran (Natalie Morales). It was then reported that Scorone’s break will last until the end of 2025. The outlets noted that the decision to reduce Scorone’s visibility came amid austerity measures.

Scorone is still expected to return.

Camilla Luddington

With Jo having recently given birth to twins, Camilla Luddington is probably not going anywhere.
