The Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) released a statement in support of the Trump administration’s AI policy framework on Thursday.

“SAG-AFTRA welcomes the administration’s National Policy Framework for Artificial Intelligence and its recognition that American leadership in AI must be accompanied by strong protections for human intelligence,” the union said in a statement sent to TheWrap. “Our members’ performances, voices and likenesses are not copyrighted material; they are the product of human talent and work, and deserve protection.”

The White House released a national AI legislative framework designed to support innovation while protecting Americans last week. The plan laid the groundwork for national policy instead of state-by-state laws to navigate the growing artificial intelligence industry and its impact on intellectual property rights, free speech and American society.

The Hollywood actors’ union has praised the draft’s recommendation to allow courts to resolve ongoing issues regarding potential copyright infringement and the idea that “workers should share in the benefits of AI.”

“[W]”I also believe that free market licensing should continue to thrive, combined with SAG-AFTRA’s ability to collectively negotiate fair licensing terms and fair revenue shares,” the statement said.

SAG-AFTRA also agreed with the Trump administration that Congress needs to pass legislation to ensure legal protections now.

“[W]strongly supporting the draft’s call for Congress to pass federal legislation against the misuse of digital replicas while maintaining the strong protections of the First Amendment,” the statement concluded. “People need control in a world full of digital clones, but that control cannot harm the freedom of speech that our industry relies on to entertain and inform the world. Congress should move quickly to enact bipartisan NO FAKES legislation. “

Fox News Digital has reached out to SAG-AFTRA and the White House for comment.

SAG-AFTRA has long fought for the protection of AI replication of actors’ faces and voices, especially after actress Scarlett Johansson accused OpenAI of simulating her voice without her consent in a 2024 chatbot.

The union previously also supported the NO FAKES Act of 2024, which aimed to “hold individuals or companies liable for damages for producing, hosting, or sharing a digital image of a person performing an audiovisual work, image, or sound recording in which that person never appeared or was otherwise authorized — including digital likenesses created by artificial intelligence (AI).”
