Russia launched nearly 400 drones and several missiles into Ukraine on Monday night, prompting NATO to attack warplanes in neighboring countries, according to reports.

The airstrikes killed at least four people and injured more than 22, and the strikes hit several regions, including Kyiv, Zaporizhzhia and Kharkiv, the Associated Press reported, citing Ukrainian officials.

Poland and Romania both attacked warplanes as Russian strikes approached NATO airspace, East2West reported, and Warsaw put its defenses on “high alert,” Poland’s operational command said.

“Due to the activity of the Russian long-range air force carrying out strikes on the territory of Ukraine, the Polish and allied air forces have begun to operate in our territory,” said the Polish operational command, according to East2West.

In the past hours, two F-16 fighter jets were attacked in the NATO province of Romania while Russian planes attacked Ukraine near the Danube river, the outlet reported. The Danube is part of the border between Ukraine and Romania.

Ukrainian military leaders say Russian forces have stepped up attacks along the 750-mile front line, as hundreds of attacks have been reported in recent days.

The Institute for the Study of War said the escalation suggests that Moscow’s long-awaited summer offensive is now underway, according to the Associated Press.

Ukraine’s air force said Russia had launched about 400 drones. Ukrainian officials later said most were blocked or disrupted, although some were able to hit their targets, according to East2West.

Russia also launched 23 missiles and seven missiles into Ukraine overnight, hitting at least 10 locations across the country, according to the Ukrainian military.

Citizens of Ukraine have endured endless sanctions since Russia launched an all-out attack on its neighbor more than four years ago. US talks between Moscow and Kyiv over the past year have not brought relief, as Russia rejected Ukraine’s proposal for a ceasefire.

The latest strikes came after Ukraine attacked Russia’s largest Baltic port, Primorsk, in a direct attack a day earlier, leaving the key export hub in flames, East2West reported.

Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin’s ambassador in London, Andrey Kelin, threatened “serious” consequences for what he said was Ukraine’s use of Storm Shadow missiles, which this month hit and damaged a microelectronics factory in the Bryansk region of Russia.

“The British, despite their participation in the use of Storm Shadow missiles is impossible, decided to remind everyone about Ukraine and themselves,” he said. “However, any action has consequences. And for everyone involved in the Bryansk tragedy, the consequences will be dire.”
