Conan O’Brien pays tribute to Martin Short at Oscars 2026 after tragic death of actor’s daughter Katherine

Conan O’Brien paid tribute to his friend and actor Martin Short at the 2026 Oscars following the tragic death of his daughter.
After “One Fight After Another” was announced as Sunday’s top picture, the actor wrapped up the 98th Academy Awards by shouting to the Dolby Theater audience, “It’s happy hour.”
“We love you, Martin Short! Good night!”
The sweet moment came after several A-listers led the “In Memoriam” segment, which honored stars like Rob Reiner, Diane Keaton, Catherine O’Hara, and more.
Martin has taken a step back from his comedy routine and any industry events as he mourns the loss of his only daughter in Feb. 24. He was 42 years old.
The social worker died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, according to her death certificate issued by the Los Angeles Department of Public Health and obtained by TMZ.
His death certificate also confirmed that he was cremated.
At the time of her passing, a lawyer for the “Only Murders In The Building” actress told us, “It is with great sadness that we confirm the passing of Katherine Hartley Short.
“The Short family is devastated by this loss, and requests privacy at this time,” they added. “Katherine was loved by all and will be remembered for the light and joy she brought to the world.”
The Los Angeles Fire Department also confirmed to Page Six that they “responded to a report of a shooting” at Katherine’s Hollywood Hills address at approximately 6:41 pm and “a female was reported dead.”
Katherine, who legally changed her name to Katherine Hartley in 2012, was found dead behind a locked bedroom door with a “note” and a gun nearby.
His body was reportedly found after his close friend called the authorities because the social worker had not heard from him in 24 hours.
However, Katherine’s neighbor noted that she showed no “indications” that she had a mental problem.
Martin and his late wife, Nancy Dolman, adopted Katherine, as well as sons – Oliver Patrick, 39, and Henry Hayter, 36.
