A Maryland student has been charged as an adult after stabbing a classmate

A 17-year-old student has been charged as an adult after allegedly stabbing a classmate at Great Mills High School in St. Mary’s County, Maryland. The 19-year-old victim has been released from hospital and is recovering from a stab wound to the chest.

The incident happened at noon on Tuesday when the two students were arguing in the school bathroom, according to the Sheriff’s Office in St. Investigators say the suspect pulled out a knife and stabbed the victim once under his thigh, according to local Fox 5 DC.

The injured student was taken by the school’s baseball plane to a nearby hospital just before 1 p.m. He was released Wednesday afternoon.

A 17-year-old suspect was taken into custody at the scene, and authorities recovered the weapon, described as a folding knife.

The juvenile suspect was charged as an adult with first and second-degree assault and possession of a dangerous weapon on school property. The charging papers were not yet available, because the suspect is still young.

“I heard what happened. We saw a helicopter landing because we live right there and we watched it go around in a circle and I went outside, and they told me what happened – someone got stabbed, and they had a knife in the cell, and he wasn’t running to cause a threat, and I was happy,” neighbor Edward Harris told Fox 5.

Students were kept in their classrooms while a school official secured the building. Officials praised the school resource officer (SRO), school staff and medical personnel who responded quickly.

“There was quick action by our SRO, who was on the scene, was able to get there as quickly and safely as possible,” said a St. Louis Sheriff’s Office Detective. Mary’s County Helen Deitrich.

“He was able to spread the information in real time, because he is in that school, the help of our medical experts who arrived at the scene and evaluated the victim immediately, and the nurses at the school, they did an amazing job.”
