It’s unbelievable we subvert the narratives of true crime by shifting their focus to survivors of abuse, and as a result create thoughtful and powerful narratives free of melodrama. The show grapples with the toll that reality takes on victims of sexual abuse, making it more than just a police procedural but a true reflection on the patriarchal situation. Dever, Collette and Wever are all amazing in their performances.
2. ‘American Vandal’ (2017-2018)

The American Vandal takes true crime and turns it on its head with this engaging and funny satire of documentary likes Making a Murderer again Serial. In the first season, The American Vandal tries to identify the cause of an ambitious high school game that leaves 27 intellectual vehicles covered in phallic images. New players Peter Maldonado (Tyler Alvarez) and Sam Ecklund (Griffin Gluck) try to uncover the truth behind the class play Dylan Maxwell (Jimmy Tatro) has a crime pinned on him and is fired.
The second season of The American Vandal takes the series to a head when Peter and Sam go to a Catholic high school after the cafeteria’s lemonade is laced with laxatives, and find themselves busy trying to identify the perpetrator known only as “The Turd Burglar.” It’s not just that The American Vandal a unique lamp, with the sound of laughter, is also a really fascinating mystery. Marked by an amazing sense of authenticity, The American Vandal it mimics true crime while being more narratively intelligent than most straight-up thrillers.
1. ‘Derry Girls’ (2018-2022)

Set during the final years of The Troubles, Derry girls follows a group of teenagers in Northern Ireland who attend the fictional high school Our Lady Immaculate College. Erin (Saoirse-Monica Jackson), Orla (Louisa Harland), Clare (Nicola Coughlan), Michelle (Jamie-Lee O’Donnell) and Michelle’s English cousin James (Dylan Llewellyn) navigate through growing political and cultural upheavals, often slipping into absurd, comical situations as they endure the growing pains of adolescence.
Derry girls Admittedly, it’s loved by its fans (especially in Ireland), but one can’t help but feel that this sitcom deserves more mainstream attention in the United States than it has received. Ultimately, the show serves as an honest and accurate portrayal of teenage life during The Troubles while also being a genuinely funny sitcom. And not only Derry girls funny, but also warm, surprisingly touching and colorful with memorable, diverse characters.
