‘Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri’ (2017)
Since no arrests have been made, Mildred Hayes (Frances McDormand) is not forced to seek justice for her daughter, Angela, who was sexually assaulted and killed seven months ago. In a powerful statement of outrage and defiance, Mildred has three provocative signs posted outside her hometown of Ebbing, Missouri to appeal to the police chief (Woody Harrelson) to take action. Without trying to open the case, the violent deputy king (Sam Rockwell) doesn’t take Mildred’s billboards lightly – and neither do the townspeople. But Mildred ignores the gossip and scrutiny; ready to burn everywhere.
Martin McDonaghBest picture nominated Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri a unique dark comedy that combines sharp, timely social commentary. No actress could have played Mildred better than McDormand, and for her performance, she received a well-deserved third Oscar for Best Actress. In addition to McDormand, Harrelson and Rockwell, the film includes an excellent cast Caleb Landry-Jones, Lucas Hedges, Peter Dinklage again Samara Weaving.
‘The Spectacular Now’ (2013)
Popular high school party boy Sutter (Miles Teller) meets Aimee (Shailene Woodley) in an unusual way: after he got drunk and ended up on someone’s lawn, where Aimee found him the next day. The two unexpectedly hit it off despite their stark personality differences, and Sutter asks Aimee to teach him geometry. As their relationship develops, it goes from friendship and mentor/coach to true romance. As Sutter deals with problems in his home life and Aimee prepares for life after high school, their love grows stronger – but will it survive the past graduation?
Newcomers Woodley and Teller showed off their acting skills in Amazing Now, a sweet and lovable upcoming high school drama. The film does a great job of avoiding typical high school movies and clichés, instead crafting a picture of troubled youth that feels authentic. Teller and Wooley don’t just look the part, they feel it too, and it’s refreshingly a film where it manages to be weird.
‘Love and Basketball’ (2000)
Best friends Quincy (Omar Eppsand Monica (Sanaa Lathan) have lived together for many years, unchanged, but their friendship eventually becomes more than platonic. However, they both dream of becoming professional basketball players. Quincy has big shoes to fill, as his father, Zeke (Dennis Haysbert), plays for the Los Angeles Clippers. However, Quincy is naturally talented, while Monica is gifted but extremely competitive, sometimes letting her emotions get the better of her while on the court. As they begin their separate athletic journeys, can the two lovebirds stay together?
This romantic sports drama is as insightful a look at the stresses and strains of being a young athlete as it is an incredibly touching love story woven together to perfection by Lathan and Epps. Love & Basketball marked by an impressive directory from Gina Prince-Bythewoodwho carries the film with style and confidence. With great writing, fun basketball sequences and real romance, Love & Basketball it’s an unusual sports movie worthy of swooning.
